WANTED: CLASS PARENTS

We still have many classes needing volunteers for class parents:

1M, 2M,2T,2F,3D,3P,3V,4T,4F,4H,5C,5S,6H.

If you are interested to take on the role of ‘class parent’ for your child’s class this year, please put in an expression of interest to Ms. Fritzi with your child’s name, class and phone number.

You can do this ringing the front office on 25748249 or emailing her on fritzi.yu@bradbury.edu.hk by Friday next week.

I will contact people the following week and arrange a meeting at school to briefly outline the role and answer any questions.

The main role is supporting your child’s class as a link between our PTA and the families in your child’s class and touching base with new families. Most of this role can be done from home and by email and should not be an overly large time commitment.

Therese Gallen – Vice Principal

P.E. NEWS AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

I am pleased to announce the start of our after schools sports programme on Monday 7 September. Thank you to those who have already signed and paid for their sporting activities. We still have some spaces left, if you would like your child to be involved in an activity, gateway will be open until Friday 4 September.

Here at Bradbury, we are pleased to offer a diversity of sporting opportunities and a small charge may be applicable to some activities to cover equipment, external hiring of facilities and pitch hire. This does vary depending on the resources used.

Once you have signed your child on gateway you will receive a letter with all information and payment details required.

I thank you for your co-operation and look forward to working with you this term.

Nicola Jackson – Head of P.E.

STUDENT P.E. FOOTWEAR

At the end of the 2014-2015 academic year, the P.T.A. Committee, in consultation with the P.E. teacher, reviewed the school’s uniform guidance on student P.E. footwear.

One of the issues raised during the process was the difficulty of sourcing cross training sports shoes in Hong Kong that were white. As a result the P.T.A. Committee revised the guidance on Student P.E. footwear as follows:

Student P.E. footwear should be a versatile, non-marking, cross training sport shoe that will suit the wide range of activities covered during specialist and class P.E. lessons. Therefore, they need to be suitable for running, jumping and kicking on hard flat surfaces. Footwear with rollers or flashing lights etc, do not meet this criteria and are unsuitable to wear for P.E. lessons.

Although you will note that there is now no mention of colour in the guidance, it is important to note that the shoes should be cross trainers, as lightweight running shoes are not versatile enough for the range of activities that students will encounter during their P.E. lessons.

John Ainsworth – Vice Principal

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES – SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS

We are still finding a number of students being left unattended between the time school finishes and when after school activities start.

Some after school activities are run by outside providers and Bradbury staff are not available to supervise students or take them to activities after the 2.40 school finishing time. The school is open to members of the public during these times, providers running the session may have unavoidable last minute cancellations, and it is not safe for our students to be left unattended on the school grounds after school.

Please note the following arrangements to ensure the safety of all students.  Students in Year 1 and 2 must always be collected by a designated adult at 2.40 pm who is then responsible for supervising them to their activity session.

Students in Years 3-6 who have an activity that starts at 3 pm only, are to move straight to the lower playground near the gym where they will be sent to their activity at 3 pm. They must be collected promptly by their designated adult from the activity.  Students in Years 3-6 who have an activity that starts after 3 pm must have a designated adult supervising them until that time.

Students must not be left at school unsupervised for activities that start later than 3pm. They are welcome to wait with their supervising adult in the undercover areas, or may be better to travel home first and return to school later.

Thank you for your attention to this requirement to ensure the safety of all our students.

Therese Gallen – Vice Principal

PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME

Over the course of the year I will be including information in the school Newsletter about different aspects of the Primary Years Programme (PYP).

To begin with, I have included a description of the IB Learner Profiles as these underpin successful learners and learning at Bradbury.

The Learner Profile

The aims of the PYP are expressed as a set of desired attributes that characterise successful 21st century Learners. The Learner Profile supports students to be “internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world”. IB learners strive to be:

Inquirers

They develop their natural curiosity, acquiring the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research. They learn independently and with others. They actively enjoy learning and sustain this love of learning throughout their lives.

Knowledgeable

They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understandings across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Thinkers

They use thinking skills critically and creatively to approach complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical decisions.

Communicators

They understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. They collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of others.

Principled

They act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, and respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.

Open-minded

They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from experiences.

Caring

They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and the world around them.

Courageous

They approach unfamiliar situations with courage and forethought, and work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and strategies. They are brave and resourceful when faced with challenges and change.

Balanced

They understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others.

Reflective

They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experiences. They are able to assess and understand their strengths and weaknesses in order to support their learning and personal development.

PARENT HELPER INFORMATION SESSION –

FOR PARENTS FROM ALL YEAR LEVELS

Thursday, 10 September, 1:30 p.m. here at school.

We always appreciate the wonderful support that we have with parents helping out in so many ways here at Bradbury School. If you are able to help in any capacity this year, whether in the classrooms or in the library, we would like to meet with you to outline a few important legal requirements for parents working in schools and to answer any questions that you may have.

The first part of the meeting, which is for parents from all Year levels, should finish around 2 p.m.

We would then ask that parents from Year 1 remain until 2.30 as the Year 1 teachers will outline the Year 1 parent support program. We hope that as many parent helpers as possible can attend.

Therese Gallen – Vice Principal
