Bradbury Newsletter 2 June 2017

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Bradbury School Community,

Greetings to you all!

We have had some wonderful school events over the last two weeks which have given us the opportunity to come together as a school community and support our students’ learning. Thank you to all for coming along.  It is always good to have our parents and family members in our school – our children love having you here.

We are getting excited about our upcoming school production ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ on 8 June.  The production is always an event that takes my breath away.  Please come along and share this presentation if you are able.

Thank you.

REMINDER: STUDENT LED CONFERENCES 2016-2017

As part of our annual assessment and reporting process, we will be organising Student Led Conferences once again this term.

The purpose of Student Led Conferences is very different from that of Parent/Teacher Consultations in that it includes your child in the process and challenges them to take ownership of assessment of their work. The students will lead the conference, and will also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with you. The conference will involve your child discussing and reflecting on their work and identifying strengths and areas for improvement.  It enables you to gain a clear insight into the kind of work your child is doing and offers an opportunity for you to discuss their work in the school context.

In order to facilitate this valuable learning opportunity for our students, on the day of their conference they will attend school only at the time of their conference. We will be sending you the time of your child’s conference soon. In the meantime please note the dates of the Student Led Conferences this year:

Tuesday 06th June 2017:                       Years 1 & 2

Thursday 15th June 2017:                     Years 3 & 4

Wednesday 21st June 2017:                Years 5 & 6

We shall look forward to sharing this valuable learning experience with you.

YEAR 3 MARKET DAY

On Tuesday, 23 May, the Year 3 students held their Market Day as a part of their How We Organise Ourselves Unit Of Inquiry (UOI).  This unit saw students looking into how and why business are created as well as how businesses persuade customers to need and want their products.  Students developed products based on market research they conducted by questioning their target market. These products were marketed and then sold at the market day to the wider school community.

Once their “business loans” were paid back to the Bank Manager, John Ainsworth’s twin brother, Benjamin, students donated their profits to the charity of the year groups’ choice, which this year was Bethune House.  I am pleased to announce, that after all the hard work and dedication from the Year 3 students and the Year 3 teaching team, this year, the students raised $21,563 profit.  We are now getting in contact with Bethune House to see how this money can be best used.  This is an outstanding effort!

Thank you to the Bradbury community for the support you showed our students for their Market Day!

Toby Daniel – Year 3 Leader

PARKING OUTSIDE BRADBURY SCHOOL

As we are all aware, our school is situated in an area with very little easy parking spaces and reasonably heavy traffic at the start and end of the school day. This makes dropping off and picking up children by car a tricky task. Whilst we are aware of this, we would like to request the following:

In order to keep our students safe, could all parents who pick up their children from school by car please be reminded to not double park outside school whilst waiting for your children. This causes very dangerous situations with the heavy traffic at the end of the school day.

Our buses can occasionally find it very difficult, if not impossible, to leave the school gates due to cars being parked opposite the school gates. Please ensure that this area is kept clear.

Please consider using the pedestrian crossing when crossing the road as the traffic coming down the hill can be moving very fast, on a corner.

And finally, please do not leave your car unattended as we may need to move vehicles quickly in case of any emergency.Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.

These are some of the car plates noted which have been double parking over the last two weeks:

GU 683 – Silver Mini

FE 1016 – Silver Porsche

MC 2208 – White Toyota

JT 66 – Black Audi

RF 3985 – Black Mercedes

AJ 9 – Black 7 Seater

Cars may not drive into the staff car park to drop off/pick up children.

REMINDER: LAST CALL FOR RECIPES!
This year the Bradbury PTA and the EcoDudes are joining forces to produce a school cookbook. The aim is to promote healthy eating, healthy lifestyles and to reduce the amount of over packaged lunch/snack food being bought into school which causes environmental waste. The Eco Dudes want to encourage families to cook together and for students to become more aware of what they are eating.

We are looking to gather a variety of favourite recipes from all members of our community. We would love parents/families to contribute a recipe by completing the following link to a google doc where we ask you to provide the following information:

·  A title for the recipe

·  Information about the chosen recipe e.g where it came from, why you have chosen this recipe etc

·  Serves (number of people the dish will feed)

·  Preparation time

·  Cooking time

·  Ingredients needed

·  Method

·  Tips e.g how the food can be served, alterations to the recipe etc

This term, we will be asking parents/families to bake/make and bring the dish into school for staging and photographing by professional photographers/chefs.This will ensure the photos in our cook book meet the printing specifications and will enhance the overall look of the book.

Please read the instructions and complete a submission on or before 16 June 2017.

Here is the link for the recipe submission:

Thanks and we look forward to reading your recipes.

ADVERTISING IN THE BRADBURY COOKBOOK

This cookbook will contain our community’s favourite recipes and will raise funds for a great PTA project that will benefit the students, as well as promoting less packaging and healthy food choices for our students.

We thought that one way of supporting the cost of producing this would be to sell advertising on the inside back cover. We will limit this advertising to Bradbury parent businesses only.

It is envisaged that these advertisements will be business card size. Because of this, we will have a limited number of spaces available. Further details, such as the costings will be forwarded later; at this stage, we would like to gauge interest so that we can make space in the Cookbook accordingly. The more advertising, the more economic it will be for us all!

If you are interested, please contact me on amanda.bremner@bradbury.edu.hk

Thank you.

Under the ESF Ordinance, all parents are automatically members of the PTA of their child/children’s school(s). Annual PTA membership of Bradbury PTA is HK$700 per family. This amount is included in the bus fee of all bus users, but must be paid separately by non-users of the bus service.  Please complete and return the attached form for PTA membership even if you are not applying to use the bus service.

The Bus Service

The PTA-administered Bradbury School bus service is one of the most extensive and cost effective escorted bus services in Hong Kong.  Our network of routes transports about 600 children safely to and from school every day and the rates are very favourable compared with those charged for escorted bus services at other schools.

If you wish to use the bus service for the 2017/18 school year please complete and return the attached application form ASAP.  We need your cooperation to submit your application so that routes and bus stops can be finalizedPlease note that any applications from current students received after 26 May will be subject to a $100 surcharge.

Please consult the attached provisional list of routes and bus stops when completing your application. Please note that this list is subject to possible revision once all applications have been received. We reserve the right to make changes as necessary to accommodate as many students as possible.

Please also note that the bus service is not a ‘door to door’ service. Routes and stops will be determined based on student safety, practicality and efficiency. Requests for changes to routes and stops will be considered only in special circumstances, and are subject to the approval of the PTA committee and the bus company.

Please note that the buses are air-conditioned, are equipped with seat belts and the children are supervised throughout their journey by a dedicated bus escort.  All users are obliged to comply with PTA rules for good behaviour whilst travelling on the buses and seat belt use is compulsory.

You may choose to pay the full year’s bus fees in advance or in three installments (by sending in three post-dated cheques).
