Bradbury Newsletter 1st September 2017

Greetings to you all:

Many thanks to all parents who came to our recent Meet the Teacher presentations.  Wonderful, as always, to have you in our school!  The presentations are on the school website.

One of the most important tasks we have for this year is to review our Mission and Vision (M&V) Statement.  These are approximately eight years old and at the time they were written were aspirational.  We have now caught up with the aspirations they articulated and so, it is time to review them.  We need your input!  Therefore, you are invited to come to school Friday 8 September 1-3pm to be a part of the process.  If you are able to attend, please RSVP to Fritzi.Yu@Bradbury.edu.hk.

Our Bradbury School Family Welcome Picnic is scheduled for Friday 15 September 5-7pm.  All are welcome.  Just bring a picnic and a rug to enjoy meeting other parents and school staff in a social setting.  Just a couple of reminders:

  • No staff are not ‘on duty’.  Parents are responsible to look after their children.
  • Parents must attend with children.  Helpers are welcome as part of the family group but not on their own with the children.

Prospective Island School Parents:

Mr. Steve Loggie, the Principal of Island School will be holding a meeting for prospective IS students on 19 September 5:30-6:30pm.  Click for more information about this meeting.

Shoe and uniform reminder:

A reminder that school uniform shoes are black.  These need to be sturdy school shoes, not party or slipon shoes, which may be hazardous in the wet or on stairs.  Sports shoes should be white or black.  If you have difficulty locating these, a small coloured insert is acceptable.  No coloured laces, lights or wheels. Sports shoes should only be worn on timetabled specialist PE days. We encourage our students to take pride in wearing the correct uniform and additional, non-uniform items should be left at home. No nail polish, stick on tattoos or jewellery is to be worn.

Election for Parent Representative on Student Council:

We currently have one vacancy for a parent representative on our School Council.  This is a governance role which does not concern

itself with the day to day management of the school, but rather strategic direction, finances, policy setting etc.  Click here for Information, nomination form ad candidate’s statement for the election.  Please come and see me if you would like to talk about this further.

Counsellor:

Our school counsellor will be in school as from next week.  Our policy and procedure are currently being finalised.  These will be sent out to you shortly so that you understand the referral and permission process.

Thank you.

Sandra Webster

Principal

Election of Parent Members of the School Council

1 Sept 2017

TO : All Parents

Dear Parent,

ESF Elections 2017
Election of Parent Members of the School Council

I write to give notice of the election of one (1) Parent Members to a casual vacancy on the School Council of Bradbury School following the resignation of Venus Lee who no longer has children at Bradbury School.

The term of office of School Council members is three years.

The election arrangements require a candidate to have a proposer. I attach a nomination form to enable you to propose a candidate. The candidate must indicate in writing his/her willingness to stand and should be asked to prepare a brief personal statement setting out his/her relevant experience and stating what he/she would hope to contribute to the Council and the School.  Parent Members of the School Council may not be employees of ESF.

The last date for the receipt of nominations, which should be handed in or posted to the school office, is
8th September.

This year, our school will be using an e-voting system, “Simply Voting” to run the election.  Starting from 22nd September, parents can vote by logging into the Gateway and accessing the e-voting platform via the listed hyperlinks.  The e-voting will close at 5:00 pm on 29th September.

Yours sincerely,

Ms. Sandra Webster
Principal

Action at Bradbury School

Action is an essential part of The Primary Years Programme and forms a key part of school vision “enhancing our world“. Our first community action event with Sunshine Action is coming up on Monday the 25 September. This is a great opportunity for families to serve in the community together and to help people less fortunate than themselves.

Bradbury defines action learning as “acquiring the knowledge, skills and attitudes that empower us to be socially responsible citizens and to take authentic, sustainable action within the local and global community in order to make a difference to the world around us”.

At Bradbury, we provide our community with various events across the year in which we can help others. Feeding people in need is one such event. Please find the details below:

Where: Nam Cheong MTR Station Exit A – meet across the road outside Fu Cheong Mall

Time: 6.00pm to 7.30pm (meet 5.45pm)

Who: Year 2-6 students and families/friends (students need to be accompanied by an adult)

How: MTR Tung Chung orange line from Central Station

Cost: $200 per person (this covers the cost of the food we deliver and is payable in cash when we meet on the evening)

If you are interested in taking part, please notify Ms. Fritzi in the school office and either Ms Farrington or Ms. Bremner will contact you closer to the time with more details.

Amanda Bremner – PYP Co-ordinator

Council of International Schools and Primary Years Program Reviews 2017/18

This year Bradbury will be undertaking a joint Council of International School (CIS) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Evaluation. This is part of a five year review cycle to ensure the educational principles, standards and practices are being maintained and also to help schools establish a future action plan. Steve Fennelly (VP) will be leading the CIS process and Amanda Bremner (PYP Coordinator) will be leading the IB review.

We will be holding a parent information session to explain the process further and to go through some terminology that is used in the upcoming school review surveys on Wednesday 13 September from 5.00 pm – 6.00 pm in the school Hall. Any interested parents are welcome.

Steve Fennelly (Vice Principal)

P.E. News

Welcome back to Bradbury School from the PE department!

B.A.M (Bradbury Active Mornings)

Every morning at Bradbury, we inspire the students into a good habit of balance. No, not standing on one leg or, on their heads, but making them understand that movement is just as important as reading, writing and doing maths.

Before school, each day, the teachers lead 3-4 minutes of physical activity to get their students moving to increase their heart rate.  In turn, this releases chemicals within the body, activating the brain for the day promoting concentration and positive energy.

We hope that if we instil these healthy habits from an early age, this will increase their chances to have a life long habit of physical activity.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

This term’s after school activities start on Tuesday, 5 September. Payments should have been made and delivered to school by the end of close today.

If you have any further questions about the after school activities, please direct them to me. Any payment issues, please contact the Accounts department.

We hope the students have a great term with such a variety of activities on offer.

NETBALL HELP

During this term, we often require some support for netball team particularly when the girls have matches on a Wednesday afternoon. If you feel you have some expertise in either coaching or umpiring and you’re available at this time, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

WELCOME BACK, MRS.  HOPEWELL

Firstly, I’d like to welcome back Mrs. Hopewell from her great achievements in the Women’s Rugby World Cup. For those of you who haven’t heard, this was the first ever Rugby World Cup experienced by a Hong Kong rugby team.

Despite the defeats on tour, the relentless hard work, determination and endeavour was clearly evident throughout the tournament from the team.

On behalf of all at Bradbury, I would like to say that we are very proud of you and the Hong Kong girls and we, particularly, loved your try against Spain.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT…

Physical Literacy – COMPETENCE builds CONFIDENCE

Do you know what physical literacy is? Watch this easy to watch video to help you understand about the foundations which we require to take part in a variety of sports and activities.
