BRADBURY NEWSLETTER – 12 JANUARY 2018

Greetings to you all!

A very warm welcome back to Term 2.  Although we have had a chilly start, learning is on fire around our school.  I like to spend some time each day in the classrooms.  It is a joy to be a part of the exciting
experiences that your children get to enjoy everyday.

Our Year 5 and 6 Sports Day was a great event—our students excelled with their enthusiasm and effort.  Some demonstrated their high level of physical ability.  Many thanks to the staff involved in organising and running this.

At assembly today, staff and students shared something that they were proud of.  It didn’t need to be related to a piece of work or even to school—it was just something that they do that makes them feel good about themselves and their learning.  Important for us all to have and this feeling feeds into a positive self image of being a learner.

Music Activity at Bradbury School
By Gethyn Clothier, Head of Performing Arts

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS

Children at Bradbury School have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument and lessons are taught by experienced peripatetic teachers as follows:

Violin  Years 1 to 6 Guitar Years 2 to 6

Flute Years 4 to 6 Voice Years 2 to 6

Piano Years 1 to 6

These lessons are generally taught individually, either at lunchtime or after school and on a private basis. Lessons costs approximately $300 for 30 minutes, but this does vary slightly depending on the teacher. The school has several clarinets that can be rented for $500/term and guitars for $400/term. If you would like your child to begin lessons, please contact the appropriate teacher directly to discuss specific arrangements such as time and cost of lessons, purchase of instrument, any books needed, etc.

SCHOOL CHOIRS

The Upper Choir, for children in years 4 to 6, will continue to rehearse on Thursdays from 3.00 to 3.45 pm. Our next rehearsal will be on Thursday, 25th January.

The Lower Choir, for children in years 2 and 3, rehearses on Wednesday lunchtimes and will recommence on Wednesday, 24th January. All children in years 2 and 3 are welcome to join and they should come to the music room as soon as they have eaten their lunch each Wednesday.

ORCHESTRA

The school orchestra will rehearse on Tuesdays from 3.00 to 3.45 pm. This is for children who play an orchestral instrument to at least grade 2 level. We will begin this term on Tuesday, 23rd January.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION

There will be a school production towards the end of the year and I am going to hold pre auditions for this over the next couple of weeks to gauge the level of talent of any interested children. This will initially be for children in years 3 to 6 although there may be opportunities for some year 2 children to become involved in the production.

There will be singing, acting and dancing parts available and I will be asking any interested children to prepare an appropriate piece and perform it at a lunchtime audition session over the coming couple of weeks.

Hong Kong Young Writers Awards

Well done to all the students who have submitted entries for this year’s competition. All entries will be on display in the front foyer over the next few weeks, so do pop in to read the stories and poems and view the art works.

Morning Drop Off Time

A reminder that students should not arrive at school before 8.10 am, when teacher playground supervision starts. A number of students are being dropped off very early and left unsupervised on the school grounds. If your child needs to arrive before 8.10 am to fit in with your family’s transport arrangements, please ensure that an adult carer stays with your child until 8.10 am.

School Uniform and Layers of Winter Clothing

At Bradbury all our classrooms have effective heating in winter and are kept at a comfortable temperature. As the weather has cooled off in the last week many of our younger students are coming to school overdressed, with too many layers of clothes. We have counted up to five or six layers of clothes in some cases! This is creating problems for students becoming uncomfortable from overheating and not being able to manage their own clothing.

It is important that students do not have more than one layer of underclothing under their school uniform or PE uniform  ( for example a singlet or skivvy) . The layer worn under the uniform should not be visible. Once students get warm running around on the playground, in PE classes or in the heated classrooms, they need to be able to remove outer layers of clothes by themselves.

Students are able to  wear the school jumper, school vest,  the school fleecy jacket and/or the school PE jacket over the top of their uniform. This allows students to take these items on and off themselves as needed throughout the day. Please ensure that all clothing is clearly labelled with your child’s name so that it can be easily found and returned if they should misplace it. Thank you for your attention to this.

Parents’ Assessment Meeting – Wednesday 24 January 2018
By  Amanda Bremner, PYP Coordinator

There will be a parents’ information session on assessment  on 24 January 2018 from 5pm to 6pm in the school hall.  This will focus on the school’s policy around assessment .  Please RSVP with Ms. Fritzi Yu at the front office or Fritzi.Yu@Bradbury.edu.hk by 22 January 2018.

Work in Progress…

The school is currently being prepared for an exterior paint. This should be completed by Easter 2018.

Hike for Hunger – Postponed until March
By  Amanda Bremner, PYP Coordinator

This is a regular community hike Bradbury participates in run by students from HKU and volunteers from Sunshine Action. The hike is from 9:00 am -1:00 pm starting from Mount Parker Road (off Kings Rd) and ends in Tai Tam Reservoir Road. The trail is about 11km long, is mainly flat with an uphill section at the start and can take anywhere from 2-3hrs (depends on walking speed).

We would love to have a Bradbury team consisting of students, staff and parents/families attend this event.

Cost will be $200 per adult and $90 dollars for children/students.

Donations will go Sunshine Action to help purchase food for 500 orphans and street children in Cambodia in June/July.

If you are interested in participating in this community event, please let Ms. Fritzi in the office know and more details will follow.

Chinese Talent Show

Bradbury School is proud to be one of the schools hosting The 4th International Zhou Youguang Cup Chinese Talent Show. It is now time for interested students to register for this event and it’s great to see that we already have over 30 Bradbury students registered. This is an opportunity for students to showcase their reading, reciting, singing or other skills in Chinese language. To see the categories and how to enter please click on the links below. One site has information about the competition, and the other is the registration link. Please note that the deadline for registration is January 26th, 2018 .  No late registrations will be accepted by the organisers.

The cheque for registration can be sent into Bradbury School to Ms Fritzi at the front desk. Please ensure that your child’s full name, the school name (Bradbury School), and the competition sections that they are entering are clearly written on the back of the cheque. The cheque is made payable to: HONG KONG ASSOCIATION FOR THE PROMOTION OF PINYIN QUALITY EDUCATION (PYQE)

This is a great opportunity for our students to practise their Chinese skills for an authentic and fun purpose. We will be offering lunchtime sessions in the coming months to support students in preparing for the competition. This will be advertised to students after Chinese New Year.  We look forward to seeing many Bradbury students having a go.

Bradbury School Action Day – 27 April 2018
By  Carol Farrington, Action Leader & Amanda Bremner, PYP Leader

This academic year we will, once again, have a whole school Action Day to celebrate and share the integration of action within our students’ learning experiences. Action Learning is the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that empower us to be socially responsible citizens and to take authentic, sustainable action within the local and global community in order to make a difference to the world around us.

The Action Day is scheduled for the Friday the 27th of April. On this day there will be a variety of events happening, including packing bags of toiletries. These will be distributed to some of Hong Kong’s most needy and vulnerable people with the assistance of the charity Sunshine Action. Our aim is that up to 3000 hygiene bags will be packed by students and parent volunteers.

So, we’d like you to collect UNUSED toiletry items from any hotel that you visit during the forthcoming holiday and subsequent weeks right up to 27th April. Every day millions of unused and partly used toiletry items are thrown away by hotels and end up in landfills, so our action will have an environmental, as well as a service element to it. The children can bring the items on the poster, into school and put them in the Action Day box that is in their classroom. We’ll also run a competition between the classes for collecting the most items! Alternatively they can be placed in the boxes that are in the school foyer.

So… let’s get collecting!!!

Year 4 Cake Sale

The Year 4 cake sale will be held on Thursday, 18th January 2018. We would be grateful if each year 4 Student could contribute one dozen (only) individual sized cakes for this event. Please have your child deliver the cakes to the school hall on Thursday morning. If you would like your container returned, please clearly label both the top and bottom with your child’s name and class. Please remember no nuts or nut products.

Although brownies and cupcakes are very popular, there is a school wide focus on health this year. To encourage children to make healthier choices we would love to see some alternatives that more nutritious and lower in sugar.

Volunteers – we require 9 helpers on the day between 9:30am  and 11:00am, please email your class parent or the PTA at pta@bradbury.edu.hk or call 2893 2256 if you can help.
