BRADBURY NEWSLETTER – 08 DECEMBER 2017

Greetings to you all!

This morning we were delighted to be treated to our Year 1’s Carol Concert.  Nothing says ‘Christmas’ quite like singing these songs!  Thanks to the Year 1 team, Mr. Clothier and Ms. Gallen for your hard work in supporting our youngest students in this.  Thank you parents for putting your phones away and just watching it with enjoyment rather than through a screen – we will send you a link to the video next week.

Many thanks to all parents and especially our PTA for a fantastic Winter Night Market.  What a great night – the food, stalls, events and activities.  It was all so well planned and organized.  Our students are certainly fortunate to have such a wonderful community behind them.

Farewell to Maria Lee, one of our I.N. EAs and a temporary farewell to Bertina Yuen who is going on maternity leave today.  We wish you both great happiness in the days ahead.

My thanks to you all for your support over our longest term.  On behalf of all staff, I wish you all a wonderful, refreshing and relaxing Christmas break.  See you all on January 8th.

Sandra Webster
Principal

As part of our annual Assessment Recording and Reporting (ARR) process you are able to access your child’s ongoing assessments on Gateway, where you can view your child’s current level of achievement in assessed language and maths objectives as well as the assessed PYP Units of Inquiry. This will be available to you on Gateway from Friday 15th December 2017.

In addition, at the end of the school year in June 2018, you will be able to access, print and save your child’s ‘Annual School Report’ from Gateway.

To access your child’s Online Report on Gateway:

For your information, below are the descriptors used when assessing your child’s levels of achievement:

ESF Netball and Football Tournaments
By  Ally Maclay, PE Teacher

The ESF Netball and Football Tournaments are the big end of season celebration which culminates all the hard work by pupils, teachers and parents.

The netball girls got off to a slow start with some narrow losses but they grew in confidence with a draw against a strong Australian School and a win against Discovery College.  Unfortunately this did not see them progress in the tournament any further but as teachers it was excellent to see how the girls progressed throughout the tournament.  I would like to thank Ms Sigrid Balle and Mrs Jane Thompson for their tireless support during lunchtimes and after school to guide the girls.

The football tournament was similar to the netball but again the students gained courage and belief to finish strong. 2 draws and a loss in a tough group saw the boys progress into the Medal competition where they played Quarry Bay beating them convincingly and eventually playing DBIS in the final where they won 3-0.   This season has been progressive and lots of lessons learned for the boys.  A big thank you to Mr Steve Fennelly, Ms Amanda Bremner and Mr Simone Trinh for working hard with the boys after school on a Tuesday and at tournaments.

I would like to say a big well done to all the pupils who have taken part in netball and football training and games throughout this term. I hope they enjoyed the experiences and learned a lot.

Year 4 Camp
By  Amanda Bremner, Vice Principal

Camps provide students with an outdoor educational experience which requires them to utilise many personal and social skills in an different setting. Year 4 students recently attended camp on Cheung Chau Island where they participated in activities like hiking and design and make creative structures. The students loved sleeping in dorms and having structured exploration time with their friends.

Year 2 Victoria Park Trip
By Claudia Tarr, Y2 Leader

To support our Unit of Inquiry “How we Organise Ourselves”, the year 2 children explored the different spaces available for the community within Victoria Park. The visit provided an opportunity for the students to look at the features of these spaces and talk about how people are using them.

Hong Kong Young Writers Awards 2018
By Therese Gallen, Vice Principal/Language Coordinator

Bradbury School is entered in this year’s Hong Kong Young Writers Awards.  This competition is an opportunity for children to write for different purposes, both for the competition and to showcase their writing at school, as all entries will be displayed in the school foyer.

It has been great to chat with a number of students who are currently working on their entries for the past few weeks.

This year’s theme is ‘New Journeys to the West’ .

“ Almost 1400 years ago, a brave young monk made a multi-year journey from China across the southwestern mountain to India. His trip was celebrated in a novel called Journey to the West, written about 500 years ago.”

Many of our students will already have heard the story of Xuanzang and his magical companions – including the Monkey King, a friar and a talking pig. There have been many books and movie/video versions (including ‘monkey magic’) , of this story.

Students are able to enter the following categories with the following word limits:

  • Fiction– Years 1-3 up to 500 words, Years 4-6- up to 1000 words
  • Non-fiction– Years 1-3 up to 500 words, Years 4-6 up to 1000 words
  • Poetry – no word limits
  • Cover Art–  Must be A3 size and portrait orientation (not landscape)

Entries over the word limits cannot be accepted. A3 paper is available from Ms Fritzi at the front office.

Please click on the link below for more information about the competition.

http://www.hkywa.com/

I am also including a link for a cartoon series of “Journey to the West” with English subtitles that students may like to watch to get an idea of the story- you may need to read them out for younger students.  However, there are many, many episodes!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKbgNS5-h2I

Students’ completed entries are due into school on Monday January 8th, which is the first day back after the Christmas holiday. This allows students over 8 weeks to work on their entry, including the Christmas holiday if needed. Students are also welcome to hand their completed entry into  Ms Fritzi at the front office before the Christmas break. Students must submit a hard copy of their entry- printed or handwritten- but may be called upon to provide an electronic copy if they are selected as a school entry.

It is important for parents to note that all work must be the student’s’ own work,  unassisted by adults or older students. Of course parents are able to help by looking at the online website with students and supporting them in researching the competition’s theme, discussing their ideas and following through with them.

Literacy Learning at Home
By Therese Gallen, Vice Principal/Language Coordinator

A few weeks ago I advertised the following, free online resource with the Australian Literacy Educator’s Association, which we have a membership with. Here you can find many great ideas for helping your child develop their literacy skills and aptitudes:

alea.edu.au/publicresources/resources-for-parents-and-community/little-peoples-literacy-learning

Included today is the article on ‘reading’ with plenty of ideas for things that you can do with your child at home.

Bradbury School Action Day: 27 April 2018
By  Carol Farrington, Action Leader & Amanda Bremner, PYP Leader

This academic year we will, once again, have a whole school Action Day to celebrate and share the integration of action within our students’ learning experiences. Action Learning is the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that empower us to be socially responsible citizens and to take authentic, sustainable action within the local and global community in order to make a difference to the world around us.

The Action Day is scheduled for the Friday the 27th of April. On this day there will be a variety of events happening, including packing bags of toiletries. These will be distributed to some of Hong Kong’s most needy and vulnerable people with the assistance of the charity Sunshine Action. Our aim is that up to 3000 hygiene bags will be packed by students and parent volunteers.

So, we’d like you to collect UNUSED toiletry items from any hotel that you visit during the forthcoming holiday and subsequent weeks right up to 27th April. Every day millions of unused and partly used toiletry items are thrown away by hotels and end up in landfills, so our action will have an environmental, as well as a service element to it. The children can bring the items on the poster, into school and put them in the Action Day box that is in their classroom. We’ll also run a competition between the classes for collecting the most items! Alternatively they can be placed in the boxes that are in the school foyer.

So… let’s get collecting!!!

Attendance in After School Activities

Please be reminded that if you have enrolled in an after school activity you are expected to attend it. If for any reason could not attend the after school activity, please inform the teacher in charge or ask your child to inform the teacher.

You could also inform the school office and we will pass on the message to the teacher.

Thank you for your cooperation.

[wc_divider style=”solid” line=”single” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” class=””][/wc_divider]

Lost & Found

We like to encourage our students to take care and be responsible for their own belongings.

Please ensure that you name all of your child’s belongings, as staff cannot be asked to hunt for lost items.

Named items of lost property are returned to their owners.  Un-named items are put in the LOST PROPERTY BINS on each corridor starting from the 1/F to the 4/F, both on the east and west stairs.

By 15 December, any items that are in the bins will be disposed off.

YouTube and Children’s Cartoons
An important announcement on: YouTube

We know that many children enjoy watching cartoons on YouTube at home, yet parents should be aware that there is a growing trend of inappropriate videos that feature popular cartoon characters.

Characters from Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig and more are appearing in crudely animated videos that often feature characters being beaten, maimed or even killed.

These videos are even sneaking through with the YouTube Kids app.

What you can do:

  • Help your child to select appropriate videos
  • Stay in the same room to be able to check the video is appropriate
  • Use YouTube tools to report content and disable ‘Autoplay’.

Julie Fowlkes’ training on “Motivating Reluctant Readers” .

PARENTS READING WORKSHOP

We were extremely lucky to be able to offer a complimentary workshop to parents with the reading guru Julie Fowlkes on Wednesday. Julie is a highly experienced reading advisor from the U.S and she is in Hong Kong in association with the ‘Bring me a Book’ organisation. This was a wonderful opportunity for parents to learn more about the reading process and how to encourage and motivate their children to read. The strategies that Julie discussed were interesting, practical and fun. She involved our parents in some in-depth conversations and shared some great ideas about how to make reading interesting for children, both at home and when ‘out and about’ with your child.

We would like to say a very big ‘thank-you’ to Pia Wong for organising the workshop and sharing her knowledge and expertise with the parents. Pia is a Bradbury parent and works for the organisation ‘Bring me a Book’.

“The leftover books from the Night Market will be taken to a remote village in Padada, Phillippines with an empty school library. Michael Metelnick, who is organizing the 2nd hand book drive, is a Canadian teacher whose Filipino wife is from Padada so they are on a mission to fill this library with donated books and, in the spirit of Christmas, we are thrilled to support Michael in his “One Book at a Time” effort.

Thanks!

A reminder that Bradbury subscribes to the online resource Big Universe. This website provides access to over 11,000 online books for students from kindergarten to high school. All the students have a username and password for the website and most students have this information in their school diary. Big Universe can be accessed at both home or school.

There is also an application available for Big Universe on ipads. Once this app has been downloaded and logged into, you will then automatically link to the website without having to login each time.

Username: (same for google and The Buzz)
Password: Bradbury (plus a 3 digit number)
Group Name: BSHK

Please note that you cannot login if you do not provide the group name.

Please take the time to look at this wonderful resource at home with your child and encourage them to read both fiction and nonfiction texts. Searching on Big Universe for topics that your child likes to read about will result in books that are both fiction and nonfiction and  is a great way to find texts of interest.

Please contact your child’s class teacher if you have not received the necessary information to log on to Big Universe.

READING IN UNUSUAL PLACES

We will be running the Reading in Unusual Places competition again this year. We thought we would give the students plenty of notice so they can have a photo taken during the Christmas break or Chinese New Year Holiday.  We will be accepting entries from Monday January 8th and the competition will close on Friday 2nd March. The three winners will have their photos published in the Bradbury School Yearbook. Please note that you can only submit only one photo per student.

Email entries to me at jane.thompson@bradbury.edu.hk.
