Dear All,
What a fabulous event our Family Fun Day was. We had around 600 people attend! It was great fun.
Many thanks to the P.T.A. Social Committee for organising this. The focus was not fundraising, but we did raise around HK$30,000.00 which will further support our playground development.
Our latest piece of playground equipment is due to be installed over Easter. We are also having new sink units installed in all classrooms and all our rotten door frames replaced.
Please join us for our Character Book Parade on Friday 26 March 2010 at 9.00 a.m.
Many thanks to those parents who filled in the survey. The responses were overwhelmingly positive, which is wonderfully affirming and encouraging.
I trust you will all have an enjoyable Easter break and I look forward to welcoming you back in Term 3.
Yours sincerely,
Sandra Webster
Principal

| ROAD WORKS & PARKING |
|
We have been informed that there will be a period of road works on Stubbs Road beginning in late March, with completion in December 2010. The work will be carried out in stages and we have requested that the majority of the works affecting Bradbury School, including any time that water is unavailable in school, will be in the school holidays and at weekends.
The main time for traffic disruption for Bradbury School will be the first two weeks after the Easter holidays. During this time, the off road parking will be severely compromised as the water mains will be replaced up the hill from the school.
If you are coming to school during the school day at this time, could you please find alternative methods of transport rather than private cars as there will be no parking available at or around school.
Thank you.

| YEAR 3 AND YEAR 6 INCAS STANDARDISED TESTS |
| |
Students in Year 3 and Year 6 in all ESF schools will be taking standardised tests between 12 - 23 April 2010. The standardised tests that ESF use are a computer based, interactive, adaptive test called Interactive Computerised Assessment System (InCAS), from Durham University (UK). InCAS will test students in reading, spelling, and mathematics, including mental mathematics.
We would like to emphasise that these standardized summative assessments are only one of the components that we use when assessing student’s achievement and progress, and their main purpose is to inform teaching and learning. Over the course of the school year teachers are continually assessing the progress of the students in their class, using a range of assessment methods, both formative and summative, in order to identify areas where children can improve their learning.
The results from the InCAS tests will give us an indication of how well each student is doing when compared to children of the same age and should be seen alongside the more detailed annual report which provides information on what each student knows, understands and can do across the whole curriculum over the academic year. It is important to remember that standardised tests do not cover all that a student has been taught in reading, spelling and mathematics and the results show how well a student performed in that test on a given day.

5.00-6.00pm
On Tuesday 20 April 2010 between 5.00 – 6.00pm we will be hosting an informal Primary Years Program (PYP) Informationsession. This will be an opportunity for parents new to Bradbury School and those interested in hearing about the PYP Framework to ask Mr. Chris Duncan (PYP Coordinator) and other members of the Bradbury Management and Teaching teams questions about the implementation of the PYP at Bradbury School.
To facilitate our planning for the session it would be appreciated if you could RSVP via email to Chris Duncan – christopher.duncan@bs.esf.edu.hk by Thursday 15 April 2010.
It would also be appreciated if you could email Chris Duncan with any questions about the PYP and Bradbury School that you may have. Some of the key components of the program that we may discuss are:

- Central ideas
- Lines of Inquiry
- The six subject areas
- Concepts that drive the PYP
- Skills
- Attitudes
- Action

| THANK YOU DR. STEVENSON |
|
As a special treat for Year 4, Sarah Stevenson’s (Class 4V) dad Dr. Stevenson visited Bradbury School. As an obstetrician, he helped us gain more knowledge about the human reproductive system which is part of our inquiry. “The body systems interact and work together for us to be able to function.” Over the past few weeks, he has visited each year class to tell us more about how the human reproductive system works.
Dr. Stevenson used a power point called life in the womb as well as a model of a baby in its mother’s uterus to help us understand. Dr. Stevenson is a great presenter and we would like to thank him for sharing his knowledge with us.

INFLUENZA
The Centre of Health protection has notified the school, that a recent surveillance data showed an increasing number of influenza detections amongst the Hong Kong community. There are an increasing number of institutional influenza-like illness outbreaks signalling the arrival of the traditional peak season for seasonal influenza.
The main circulating influenza viruses consist mainly of human swine influenza and influenza B.
Please be reminded, that in order to prevent possible outbreak of respiratory diseases, children with fever and respiratory symptoms are strongly advised not to attend school till 48 hours after fever has subsided. Parents should record the body temperature of their children before they attend school.
The following measures are also advised:
- Maintaining good personal and environmental hygiene.
- Keeping hands clean and wash hands properly.
- Washing hands when they are dirtied by respiratory secretions e.g. after sneezing or coughing.
- Covering nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and dispose of nasal and mouth discharge properly.
- Having a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest.
- Avoiding crowded public places where ventilation is not adequate.
- To consult doctor for medical advice promptly upon development of influenza-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat and cough.
Please inform the school nurse/ school, if your child is unwell and absent from school.

Many thanks to all of you who supported the Easter Family Fun Day last Saturday. Around 600 parents and children came along to join in the fun and while the larger than expected numbers made the Fun Races a bit crazier everyone seemed to have a good time!
A special thank you to those parents who helped with co-ordinating the races, selling food and drink, and helping with games, crafts and face-painting. Without willing volunteers we would not be able to run an event like this, so your help is very much appreciated.
A big thank you also to our Easter Bunny and MC for the Races - Steve Bemet. He was fantastic.
The event made a profit of $29,325 which will be used towards the planned playground improvements and other projects.
As you know the regular Cake and Pizza Sales which are held throughout the year are another key component of the PTA's fund-raising efforts. We thought you would be interested to know how much is being raised from these so here's a breakdown of the money raised so far this school year:
|
Cake Sales:
Year 6, 10 Sept: $3710
Year 5, 8 Oct: $3670
Year 4, 14 Jan: $3985
Year 3, 4 March: $3610
|
Pizza Sales:
Year 2, 24 Sept: $3875
Year 3, 29 Oct: $4020
Year 1, 28 Jan: $4560
|
The money raised from the Pizza Sales is donated to the Learning Centre for the purchase of new books and the money raised from the Cake Sales goes to the year groups and is usually spent on things like games for rainy day playtimes - so please continue to support these sales!

ESBC Tigers Basketball
The 2nd Annual ESF Primary Schools Basketball Tournament was recently held on the 10th of March at King George V School. The games were fantastic and thrilling with games going down to the wire! We had numerous participants from our own ESF Tigers Basketball Club represent their school! Congratulations to them all for a well played tournament!
ESF Educational Services Ltd recently fielded 3 basketball teams representing our own ESBC Tigers Basketball Club at a basketball tournament on 13 March at Hong Kong International School. Our teams played extremely well with one team making it all the way to the finals. The player from our school that participated in this tournament was Joseph Luk.

HOCKEY
After school activities have also been busy. The hockey players have enjoyed a busy term with a couple of matches between GSIS and Bradbury School taking place. In the first tournament here at school the Bradbury teams cleaned up, finishing as the top 3 places. In the second tournament at GSIS there was a bit of role reversal as GSIS finished top of the leader board. So last Friday we had it all to play for as we took on GSIS again. This time Bradbury finished in first place again! Well done to all our hockey players!
LONG DISTANCE RUNNING
As I mentioned in the last newsletter the runners are going from strength to strength. On Saturday 13th March the runners raced in the annual interschool road race against schools from all over Hong Kong. Unfortunately we only had half our runners able to attend the race which was very disappointing as we couldn’t enter the team events. We did do very well in the individual events though. With fields of up to 50 runners in each race the competition was strong. In the under 8 boys Andrew Lim romped home in 9th place chased by Matheson James in 10th place. In the under 9 boys James Davidson came an impressive 8th and Zaheu Jacota 6th. In the Under 11 girls Alexandra Rispoli finished with in an impressive 8th place.
However it was Under 10 and Under 11 boys who really conquered the course with Jasper Langford finishing in 5th place and Yehudi Chan in 2nd. Well done to all our runners.
To finish off the season the last session was at Happy Valley against GSIS. Another sterling performance from our runners! Virtually the full team ran in this race which saw the Bradbury runner on the podium constantly throughout the presentation ceremony.
The runners have been logging their runs all season. Special congratulations go to James Davidson, Kara McMillian, Toby Skinner, Kelsie Bouttle, Yehudi Chan and Jasper Langford who have all completed 42KM….a full marathon! There are a few runners out there who are just a couple of KM short, so get running over the holidays guys.
RUGBY
Well done to the Bradbury School Tag rugby team who played in the inter school tournament last Friday at HKU Sandy Bay. Every member of our team scored a Tri which is fantastic! Special mention goes to Richard Chao who scored a whopping 8 tries!!! Great work folks.
As you all know this weekend is the rugby 7’s. The Rawandan rugby team have made it to Hong Kong to join in the rugby for the first time ever! Bonza Pie is running junior and youth fun clinics with the Rwandan National Team next Wednesday 31 March in Happy Valley. The session is run on a first come first served basis. This will not only be a skills clinic but rather a chance to interact in a super fun way with the Rwandan players.
Entry cost is a $50 minimum donation. The donation money will go directly to help fund their tour and will also go towards the development of Rugby in Rwanda.
CNN are following the team here in Hong Kong and are making a documentary about their historic journey that will be shown across the globe.
For more information about the team please go to: http:// rwandarugby.wordpress.com or contact Bess at 64911014 or at bess@bonzapie.com
