Dear Parents,

Greetings to all!

Thank you for supporting our Bradbury School Picnic last week. It was a wonderful event with a great atmosphere and very much enjoyed by all.

Staff have enjoyed two days working with Dr. Kathy Gavin from the University of Connecticut, looking at ways of challenging and extending our students, especially those who perform at the top end of the spectrum.

I trust that all will enjoy the break coming your way, and wish safe travels to those going away.

I look forward to welcoming our students back on the 24th October.

Yours sincerely,

Sandra Webster
Principal

  • Items for Year Group Hampers - class parents will have more details to follow
  • Prizes for the Tombola - bottles of wine or spirits or any new gift items (for adults or children)
  • Any parent who works for or who has a connection to a toy manufacturer - we would love to have a new toy stall for the children

PTA SPENDING PLANS

Thanks to the continued support of Bradbury parents we are able to raise a significant amount of money each year to invest back into the school in ways which benefit our children.  It is important you understand the value of this support and what decisions the PTA make on behalf of our children.

In 2010-11 the PTA raised $651,467 from membership fees, shop sales, bus fees, pizza sales, cake sales and sales of the school calendar. Over $300,000 of this was donated back to the school during the same school year:

$55,000 – Learning Centre

$121,275 – External PE Coaches

$30,000 – Y6 Graduation Party

$46,467 – Classroom Carpets

$19,000 – Cake sale proceeds to classrooms

$30,297 – Continued playground projects

The balance is included in spending plans for the current year (e.g. retractable seating for Hall, continued improvements to playground areas, moveable goals posts for PE).  We hope by sharing this information on how your PTA is spending your money will further encourage everyone’s involvement in the PTA and its activities.

If you have any comments, suggestions for events or spending please contact a member of the committee or email pta@bs.esf.edu.hk

SUPERVISING STUDENTS AFTER SCHOOL

Supervising students during after school activities - Issue of rubbish being left in the playground

Recently we have noticed that a great deal of rubbish is being left in the playground during after school activities. Many students eat a snack just before they participate in an after school activity. If you (or your helper) are supervising your child at this time can you please ensure that all rubbish goes into the bins located in the playground.

Many thanks for helping to keep our playground environment clean and tidy.

Curriculum P.E. lessons
The first games units of work for the year have all now drawn to a close. The final lessons in each of these units of work was a year group tournament.  Photos and videos from each of these events are on the P.E. page of The Buzz.

Our next events in curriculum P.E. will be the end of unit athletics meets. Check out the important dates section at the front of this newsletter for the full details.

After school activities

The after school activities are also going well. We have had quite a few matches and tournaments to date. Reports and photographs from each of these events can be found on the P.E. page of The Buzz.

Charity: ISF Football kits for Cambodia
Thanks to those of you who have already donated football kit to this worthy cause. I have included the details below again in this newsletter to remind you all that we are still collecting kits for Cambodia.

We have been approached again this year to help out ISF. ISF is a charity that helps some of the poorest children in Cambodia through an education and football training programme. These children need boots to be able to join in the football training. If you would like to help this worthwhile charity just send any old football kits or boots into school and we will send them onto ISF.

If you would like more information on ISF please contact Robert Gazzi on 2289 2212 or robert.gazzi@hk.pwc.com. To find out more about ISF please visit our website: www.indochinastarfish.org

Battle of the Books

Bradbury School has also entered the Hong Kong Battle of the Books for our avid readers out there! BoB is an annual inter-school reading competition which brings together students from almost twenty international schools. Prior to the competition in the third term, competing students co-operate to read twenty books selected by the BoB organisers and practise for the competition. At the competition, teams from each school square off against each other in a series of matches testing the students’ knowledge of the books they have read. Teams are eliminated one by one until the last school standing is declared the winner.

The competition is only open to our Year 5 and 6 children and we have our first meeting this week. During the meetings, the students will be divided into teams and meet weekly to discuss the books read, share important information and compete to be the winning team for the month. The meetings have been fantastic in the past and based on the level of enthusiasm so far, this year will not be any different!

Look out for more information about this exciting competition in future newsletters.

YEAR 3 HEALTHY HABITS UNITS OF INQUIRY

In their PYP unit of Inquiry the Year 3's are learning about being healthy. As part of this unit they have had a number of specialist coaches come into school and give them taster lessons in activities that can help them to stay healthy. This week Paul Logan visited school and introduced the children to kick boxing. They were all very excited about Paul's visit.
As the session progressed Paul took them through some basic moves. All the children, and the teachers, had a great session! Check out the photos of Paul and the Year 3's in action.

If you would like your child to take up kickboxing check out the link to Paul's studio below.
