Dear Parents,

Thank you all so much for the incredible support that you showed for our recent Student Led Conferences(SLCs). Your feedback has been overwhelmingly positive as well as constructive. Thank you also for recognising the hard work in terms of preparation your child and their teacher did for these conferences. There was a real buzz of excitement around the school. It was wonderful to have so many parents sharing in a day of learning have with their child.

The intention is to integrate SLCs into our reporting schedule, and improving the process by taking into account your comments, suggestions and feedback.

I have never seen my child so excited about their work or school before.’
‘A fabulous idea and a thoroughly enjoyable learning for us as parents.’
‘An education for parents too.’
‘Fantastic confidence booster for the children to be able to take pride in their work and share their efforts with parents.’

Many thanks for your detailed, honest and constructive evaluations – they have all been read and are very helpful in terms of refining the process.

There is now a Parent Information Handbook on our website under ‘About Us.’ This gives you basic information about how our school operates. I hope you find it useful.

Sandra Webster
Principal

LITERACY UPDATE

HONG KONG YOUNG WRITERS AWARDS 2010. Thank you once again to all students that submitted entries to the Hong Kong Writers Awards 2010. I have been informed that the winning entries will be announced sometime around the middle of March – we are expecting news soon. I will let everyone know the results when I receive them.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS: Our Battle of the Books Team is still going strong!  Students meet every week and battle to be named winning team for the week.  There are 20 titles of books to be read for the formal competition in May, and we already have 3 students that have read 18-20 books!  I am very impressed with the level of commitment and enthusiasm our Year 5 and 6 students have shown for the event.  As the leader of literacy for the school – I feel we have already won the greatest battle – our students love to read!

BOOK WEEK: Bradbury will have its annual Book Week starting on the 22nd of March and culminating on the 26th of March with a Character Parade.  Please log on to the clc for more details.

As mentioned by Mrs. Perrin in the Learning Centre News, we will have a Book Fair on Monday and Tuesday of Book Week. The schedule for class times is on the cLc. During this time your child will visit the fair and purchase books that they have chosen. To support your child, we encourage you to come in and help your child make their selection. If you are unable to attend, we have many volunteers to support the children in their classes. Please remember to send money with your child on the day they visit the Book Fair – the children love taking the books straight away. Paperbacks are less than HK$100 and hard backs ranges from HK$100 – 150. Students will also have the opportunity to purchase books and donate them to the library – a special table will be set up with these books.

P.E. NEWS
WOW! What a busy few weeks it has been…..again!

The end of unit lessons has once again been a great success. Year 3 and Year 5 both thoroughly enjoyed their hockey tournaments. Year 4 were very tired, but excited at the end of their rugby session. A huge ‘thank you’ to Mark Kake from Valley for all his help and expertise during the hockey units and to Steve Jones from the HKFRU for his help with the rugby unit. The level of teaching the
children have received in both areas has been tremendous. Year 3 have now moved onto T-Ball, Year 4 onto basketball, Year 5 tennis and Year 6 rugby. Please keep an eye on the important dates at the front of the newsletter for their respective end of unit tournaments.

I hope you all enjoyed seeing the children’s gymnastics during the student led conferences. I am so pleased with how hard they have worked and how confident and talented they have become in this area. Like many of the other sports we offer at Bradbury, there is a growing interest and enthusiasm amongst the children for extra gym classes. I have spoken to Karen Smith at ESL and gymnastics is going to be extended here at school to both Monday and Wednesday

After school activities have also been busy. The hockey players have now enjoyed two tournaments against GSIS, one here at Bradbury School and one at GSIS. Both tournaments saw some great play from all our players. I have also noticed how many of the Bradbury children are playing hockey for teams outside school. It’s great to see such enthusiasm for sport in our children.

The long distance runners are still putting in the km’s. The runners have been competing in races all term, but their most successful race to date was last Thursday at CIS. Samantha Worley finished 3rd in the under 9 girls. Jake Chow finished 5th and James Davidson 1st in the Under 9 boys. Alexandra Rispoli finished 5th and Kara McMillan 3rd in the under 10 girls. Satoshi Yoshida finished 3rd and Yehudi Chan 1st in the under 10 boys. Richard Chao finished 2nd and Jasper Langford 1st in the under 11 boys. This Saturday the runners race in the annual interschool road race against schools from all over Hong Kong. We wish those competing all the best and look forward to hearing how they get on.

Remember there are no after school activities in the last week of term. Friday 19th March is the last school run activity. As we enter the last week of after school activities for this term we are already looking towards next term. You can find the sign up sheet for term 3 after school activities below.

2010 HONG KONG INTER-SCHOOL TEAM CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Bradbury School sent in 4 Chess Tigers and 3 Amazonian Soldiers to fight "tooth and nail" in this Annual Event that was officially recognised and organised by The Hong Kong Chess Federation.

Text Box: Bradbury School Team A, saw Andrew LIM - 4S, Max LI - 6K, James LI – 4S, who fought as hard as they could to score 12 points to get the 29th placing out of 42 teams. Andrew took the fight to his opponents with his daring attacking chess play. Mark and James tried to go for the jugular in the early opening stage, but this type of tactic wouldn't often go down well in this major junior level tournament, that is full of chess piranhas. These 3 Tigers of Bradbury, are the players to watch out for.

Text Box: Bradbury School Team B, had this UNIQUE FEATURE of having 3 amazonian fighters who had recently taken up the chess sport and these 3 wonder girls had defeated and shocked a few seasoned opponents to WIN 10 points out of 28 game. Tiffiny YU – 6H (1ston left), this amazonian had displayed a remarkable improvement in her grasp of chess strategy and tactics. She put the fear into the heart of a few of her opponents.  Justin MAK – Y4 (2nd on left), with his wily tricks did outwit some opponents who took him lightly and they paid the price. Pint-sized amazonian Chloe YU – 3M (3rd on left), did rattle her opponents who underestimated her ability, as she won her games with unexpected combinations.  Didrika Fisher – 1F, is  our new find, and her enthusiasm for chess is contagious as she pursues until she checkmate the opponent king. This girl is bent on winning.

If you wish to know more about chess, please contact chess teacher, Ms. HO Yin Ping by email: hoyinpingchess@yahoo.com.hk
