At Bradbury School, we greatly value our parent partnership and believe that strong school/home links enhance the education of our children. In order to ensure common home/school understandings, it is important that you attend these sessions.

ROOM TO READ

Last year, in tandem with the development of our new library, the school community worked with Room to Read to raise funds to support the building of two new libraries in Cambodia (one new stand alone, one to be developed in an existing building.) This was a very exciting joint project and have just received notification from Room to Read on the location of the major project, the stand alone library.

This information is attached for you. It is in ways like this that we can support our students to become people who are globally conscious and responsible.

THANKS FROM CROSSROADS FOUNDATION

Crossroads Foundation has express thanks for Bradbury School’s generous support and our recent donation of whiteboards and folders.

Excerpts from the letter are:

“We are constantly reminded that the fight against world need is a team effort, one in which every role – and player – is vital. We consider it a privilege to be on this team with you and thank you, most sincerely, for choosing to be on this team with us.”

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS

Children at Bradbury School have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument and lessons are taught by experienced peripatetic teachers as follows:

Violin
Guitar
Clarinet
Years 1 to 6
Years 4 to 6
Years 4 to 6
Voice
Flute
Saxophone
Years 4 to 6
Years 4 to 6
Years 5 and 6

These lessons are generally taught individually, either at lunchtime or after school and on a private basis. Lessons costs approximately $270 for 30 minutes, but this does vary slightly depending on the teacher. The school has several clarinets and flutes that can be rented for $550/term. If you would like your child to begin lessons, please email Mr Clothier in the Music Department (clothierg@bs.esf.edu.hk) stating your child’s name, class and preferred instrument. One of the instrumental teachers will then contact you to discuss specific arrangements such as time and cost of lessons, purchase of instrument, any books needed, etc. Thank you.

LIBRARY NEWS

P8250213.JPGWhat a wonderful start to the new year we have had! Our children have all been in to visit our brand new library, and I’m happy to say they all love it! It is a beautiful, spacious area that will be beneficial for Bradbury School in so many ways.

We are still putting on the finishing touches, but already the classes have all been to explore, and to borrow their first books for the year.

Some pictures are included for those who have not yet had the chance to come and look around.

PARENT EXPERTISE QUESTIONNAIRE 2011

In the Primary Years Program (PYP) students undertake six Units of Inquiry each year. At Bradbury we like to give the students opportunities to enrich their learning through the experiences, knowledge & action of others. Therefore we would be more than grateful if you would be willing to assist by helping with planning, suggesting useful contacts or giving a talk or presentation to the students. The type of help suitable would be dependent upon areas of expertise or experience that are relevant to the Inquiries.

The curriculum areas that this pertains to are Social Studies, which is the study of people in relation to their past, present & future, their environment & their society, Science, the exploration of behaviours & the interrelationships among natural, physical & materials worlds and Visual Arts.

If you are able to assist please fill in the pro-forma attached & return it by email (farringtonc@bs.esf.edu.hk) or contact us if you would like further clarification. You do not have to restrict yourself to the year group that your child/ren is/are in. We will collate a list of volunteers which will be made available to the teachers. If they feel your expertise to be useful they will contact you directly & will be able to discuss how you can help in greater detail.

Regards,

Chris Duncan - PYP Co-ordinator/Vice Principal
Grant Anderson – Science Leader

P.E. NEWS/ AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Curriculum P.E.
We have been back at school just over a week and things are already in full swing! Years 4 and 6 have already had their first soccer sessions with their teachers and fantastic coaches Linda and Amro from ESL. Year 5 have had their first session of netball with expert coach Karin Looram and they have had their first swimming lesson down at the pool.

On Monday we see the start of the Year 2’s visiting coaches. This year again we have an extremely strong team of professional coaches working with the Year 2 staff and children in soccer, netball, basketball, rounders, rugby, tennis, cricket and hockey. These coaches have been brought together from a number of the sporting governing bodies and sports coaching companies across Hong Kong.

In specialist P.E. this term all classes will be working on Athletics. At the end of the unit we will have a series of Athletics meets at Causeway Bay Sports ground. All parents are welcome to come to these lessons to see the children showcasing the skills they have been learning. The dates of these Athletics meets are on the front of the newsletter.

As you already know we have Rachel Grantham teaching in the P.E department here at Bradbury School. With the addition of Rachel to the team we will be able to introduce a number of new initiatives that will give the children more opportunities within sport. The first will be a lunchtime activity program for all children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The second is extension opportunities through a variety of athletics meets for our top runners, jumpers and throwers in Years 5 and 6. The third is the introduction of the Bradbury Sportspeople of the Year awards.

For safety reasons in all P.E. lessons please ensure your child has the correct clothing and footwear. All long hair must be tied up.

After School Activities
We are extremely lucky at Bradbury School to have a large group of teachers who offer their free time to coach the students in a wide variety of after school sports. To support these teachers please ensure you are on time to pick up your child from the relevant activity.

The after school activities will all start this coming week (Monday 5th September). Please ensure your child is dressed in suitable P.E. clothes and shoes. As with P.E. lessons all long hair must be tied up and mouth guards and shin pads worn were appropriate.

Throughout the term we will be arranging matches, races and tournaments for the children enrolled in the after school activity program. Some of these events will take place within your child’s scheduled activity time. On other occasions, for a variety of reasons, these events may need to be scheduled at alternative times. If this is the case your child will be given a letter with all the details of the event and a reply slip that should be returned to Miss Farry’s office on or before the indicated date.
Please be aware that all invites to tournaments/matches/races must be returned to school regardless of whether or not your child is able to attend the event. It is not a problem if your child can’t attend; however, we need to know so we can offer the place to another child and so we still have a full team. We have been left in the lurch a few times with children who have told us at the last minute they are not coming to the event. This is unfair to the coaches, the rest of the team and the event organizers. It doesn’t teach the children the important values of commitment, sportsmanship and team spirit.

If any parents would like to help out with any of the after school activities throughout the year, please contact me at marie.farry@bs.esf.edu.hk

As well as the after school activities for the children we also offer a pilates class for teachers and parents. The class takes place on Thursday afternoons in the music room between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. The cost is $150 per session. If you are interested in coming along just drop me an email letting me know.

Marie Farry – P.E. Leader
