Newsletter 08 January 2010

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
New Year greetings to you all. Welcome to all new members of our school community – it is great to have you with us. School has started well and we have already had two excursions and our Year 1 Athletics day this week. Thanks to all parents for your support and to our team of hardworking teachers.
This term will see the introduction of our exciting step forward in our reporting process, with the introduction of Student Led Conferences (SLCs). As you may be aware, at Bradbury, we believe that for effective learning to take place, the participants i.e. our students, must take an active role in their learning. Part of this is to be able to talk about learning and be able to show process and progress. SLCs are a part of this.
We are fortunate at Bradbury School to have a highly competent and experienced parent body. It has been helpful to be able to draw on this parent expertise in the past to support learning at Bradbury School. Included with this newsletter is a proforma to help us identify how and where we can call on and utilise the skills and experience of parents. May I encourage you to read the proforma and email it back, outlining any expertise you are able to offer our teachers. Thanks – your input is greatly appreciated.
Sandra Webster
Principal

REPORTING AT BRADBURY SCHOOL: STUDENT LED CONFERENCES
At Bradbury School we believe that students should be actively involved in their own learning and many of you will have seen for yourselves the ways in which your child can confidently articulate their learning during their class assemblies and unit of inquiry sharing sessions. This term we plan to introduce student led conferences, in place of teacher parent conferences, in order to further enhance our students’ ability to share their learning. The purpose of these conferences is to give students the opportunity to discuss and reflect on their learning with their parents. This is an extremely valuable learning experience for your children and it is important that you support them through the process.
The dates of the Student Led Conferences are as follows:
· Wednesday 3rd March 2010: Year 1 and Year 2
· Thursday 4th March 2010: Year 5 and Year 6
· Friday 5th March 2010: Year 3 and Year 4
The Student Led Conferences will be held during the school day and, on the day of their conference, your child will not attend school as normal, instead you should accompany them to school at their conference time. More details about the Student Led Conferences will be sent to you later this term.

PARENT EXPERTISE HELPING TO DELIVER THE UNITS OF INQUIRY
Dear Parents,
In the Units of Inquiry we like to give the students opportunities to enrich their learning through the experience, knowledge & action of others because this contributes to making their learning meaningful. Therefore we would be more than grateful if you would be willing to assist by helping with planning, suggesting useful contacts or giving a talk or presentation to the students. The type of help suitable would be dependent upon areas of expertise or experience that are relevant to the Inquiries. The curriculum areas that this pertains to are Social Studies, which is the study of people in relation to their past, present & future, their environment & their society, & Science, the exploration of behaviours & the interrelationships among natural, physical & materials worlds.
If you are able to assist please fill in the proforma below & return it by email (farringtonc@bs.esf.edu.hk) or contact us if you would like further clarification. We will collate a list of volunteers which will be made available to the teachers. If they feel your expertise to be useful they will contact you directly & will be able to discuss how you can help in greater detail.

The Year 3 netball tournament was also a great success. The standard of play from the children was fantastic! It was amazing to see how much the children had learnt in just 8 weeks. I’m looking forward to seeing some of these players representing our school in the near future! The winning teams of the tournament were 3T Chelsea and 3M Rudolph.
SAFETY
Please remember that all children playing hockey should be wearing shin pads and a mouth guard and those playing rugby should be wearing a mouth guard. A number of our children are turning up to lessons and after school sessions without them. For their own safety the coaches will ask the children without shin pads and mouth guards to sit out of the session. Years 3 and 5 will be participating in 8 week hockey units of work during their P.E. lessons. Years 4 and 6 will be participating in 8 week rugby units of work. They will need to wear shin pads and a mouth guard/mouth guard for these lessons. Both are available from the P.T.A shop for $45 each.
This term in their specialist P.E. lessons the children will all be learning gymnastics. They will need to take off their shoes and socks for the lessons. Please can you make sure your child can take off, put on and fasten their own shoes and socks to avoid wasting valuable teaching time. Please do not allow girls to wear tights on P.E. days as it is dangerous during gymnastics.
During the winter months the children usually wear their grey tracksuit on P.E. days. Please can you ensure your child has their P.E. T-shirt under their jumper as once they start exercising they get very warm and need to take off their jumper.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES FOR TERM 2
Our mixed netball team have got straight back into their after school activities. They competed in a tournament on Wednesday evening this week. Despite the very slippery conditions they played superbly, finishing 5th out of 11 schools. They have another tournament this Saturday at Chinese International School. I’m looking forward to watching them play and seeing how they get on.
After school activities all start next week (Monday 11th January). All enrolments should be in by now, however if you still haven’t signed up I will accept enrolments this week.
v Please print out and fill in the following form and return it to Miss Farry on the first week of term 2.
v All activities will start on Monday 11th January and run until Friday 19th March.
v All fees charged for these activities are to cover the costs of buses, pitch hirage and coaches.
v If there are too many children for an activity enrolment will be on a first come, first served basis. Assume your child has a place in the activity unless you hear otherwise from me.
v To minimize confusion please note only rounders and touch rugby will be cancelled in the event of bad weather. If this is the case you will be called and notified by school. The rest of the activities will continue indoors at school.
HONG KONG YOUNG WRITERS AWARDS 2010
It was mentioned in previous newsletter that Bradbury School has registered for the Hong Kong Young Writers Awards 2010. I have met with interested students and am very pleased with the quality of writing I have seen so far. Each student has been given a pack with the rules for the competition and frequently asked questions. The deadline for writing submissions is 28 January and must be returned to me as I will collate all submissions and send them from the school on 31 January.
If your child is interested in the writing competition and has not come to see me, please encourage them to do so. It is a great opportunity for students to work together, share ideas and encourage the love of writing.

ESL SPORTS – SAFE, FUN, EFFECTIVE SPORT CLASSES FOR CHILDREN
Sport is one of the key areas that can shape children’s minds and physical development. ESL presents a programme of activities at your school designed to encourage young people to become physically active; learn through fun; and improve their confidence and focus.
With this in mind we encourage children to start young, ensuring fundamental movement is learnt correctly in a safe and secure environment. Each sport has created its own athlete pathway to guide children’s learning at an appropriate pace to their needs. It is important to us that children not only start but develop an interest and passion for sport that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
