Bradbury Newsletter 13 November

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

 Dear All,

What a fabulous night our school picnic was! Thank you to the many Bradbury families who came along and enjoyed the evening. It was exactly what I had hoped it would be and I know from your comments that everyone had a great night. We will definitely repeat next year.

Thank you too, to the parents who attended our Year 4 Parents’ Morning Tea and our Year 3 and 4 Literacy Evening. It is always good to have parents in our school.

5B and 5C have had a wonderful time at camp at the Chong Hing Water Sports Centre in Sai Kung. Lots of tired faces on Wednesday afternoon – including teachers. Thanks especially to John Marwick for his meticulous organisation of all camps, supported by a team of dedicated hard working teachers.

A reminder that nominations for School Council need to be back to school by 3 p.m. today.

We have received a limited number of brochures outlining the ESF Primary Chinese Curriculum. These give information to parents regarding Pathway Outcomes, supporting learning and frequently asked questions. They are available for you in the school foyer.

Thank you.

Sandra Webster
Principal

AUDITIONS FOR SCHOOL PRODUCTION

I am looking for children in Years 4, 5 and 6 who would be interested in participating in a school production to be staged in the Summer term. Rehearsals will take place on Thursdays from 3.00 to 4.30 p.m., beginning in the Spring term.

Before choosing a show and holding auditions, it would be useful to know what skills or interests the children have. There may be a bias towards singing or dance, for example, rather than drama and this will help me to select a show that best matches the children’s talents.

In order to do this I would like to invite any interested children to prepare a dance or spoken piece and to perform it at the time below. I will hold singing auditions at a later date.

Please note that this is not an audition for the show itself. Full auditions will be held in a few week’s time once a show has been chosen and I will give you details of this in a subsequent newsletter.

If your child is interested in participating, they should prepare a dance or spoken piece (or both is they wish) and come to the music room as follows:

Year 6 : Monday 23 November at 11.55 a.m.
Year 4 : Wednesday 25 November at 11.55 a.m.
Year 5 : Friday 27 November at 11.55 a.m.

Thank you.

POEMS BY STUDENTS IN CLASS 3C ABOUT BRADBURY SCHOOL

Bradbury School is very cool,
For you and for me,
And every one at school,
We love our teachers,
And they love every one of us

By: Adelaide Semoli

4V FIND OUT ABOUT ECOSYSTEMS IN PUI O

On Tuesday 27th October 4V went on a visit to Pui O to find out about the water buffalo and the different ecosystems there.

Paul, Merrin and Ronald met us when we arrived and showed us where to find different ecosystems. We saw different kinds of animals including: water buffaloes eating grass with their calves and cattle egret eating insects off the buffalo’s back. We also saw mud skippers skipping through the mud and saw fiddler crabs waving their claws about. We also saw many kinds of birds like the herons. Paul taught us how to identify different birds by playing a game called Knowledge Key Game and he let us see through his telescope.

With Ronald, we identified different kinds of plants in the farm and we went fishing in the salt water marsh. We found shrimp, crabs, small fish and mudskippers.

With Merrin, we investigated different ecosystems by looking under rocks and logs. We even looked closely at buffalo dung using a magnifying glass. If you looked carefully you could see so many different bugs in there.

We saw lots of interesting things and had a fantastic day in Pui O.

 LAY-BY CAR PARKING

Firstly, thank you to the majority of our parents for avoiding parking their cars in the lay-by outside school at the start and end of the school day. Unfortunately, we still have a few frequent parkers who are parking their cars in the lay-by at the end of the school day. These tend to be mainly drivers employed by parents, who insist on parking/waiting in the bus stop lay-by, usually whilst the helper collects the children from school. The result is that they block access for everyone else to quickly pick-up their children from the lay-by and cause the traffic flow on Stubbs Road to either slow or stop.

In order to ensure the safety of all our children, can we please request again that parents, and drivers employed by parents, park their cars away from the lay-by at the front of the school and do not wait in the lay-by. For your information, as of 11th November 2009, the Police have started booking cars parked in the lay-by. Since making our last request in September the following vehicles have frequently parked or waited in the lay-by at the end of the school day

PYP NEWS: YEAR 4 PROGRAM OF INQUIRY (POI)

The most significant and distinctive feature of the Primary Years Program is the six transdisciplinary themes. These themes are about issues that have meaning for, and are important, to all of us. The six themes of global significance create a transdisciplinary framework that allows our students to move beyond the confines of learning within subject areas.

Last year teachers at Bradbury worked in collaborative teams to develop a PYP Program of Inquiry (POI).  A school’s Program of Inquiry is made up of 36 transdisciplinary Units (6 per year group). Each unit of inquiry runs for approximately six weeks. This week we will share the Program of Inquiry for Year 2.

The development of a Program of Inquiry is a continual process and teachers are constantly evaluating and reviewing the current units, along with developing new units.

P.E. NEWS

The Year 3 netball lessons and Year 4 and 6 cricket lessons with the coaches and class teachers are off to a great start! Years 4, 5 and 6 are working well through their outdoor and adventurous lessons with me in preparation for their camps. The younger students are steadily building up their athletics skills for their athletics days in December.

During after school sports we have had some fantastic results! The long distance runners attended a great cross country race at NIS in Tai Po. All the runners did an amazing job on an extremely hilly course and gave 100% through water, over hay bales and through the bush.

The top swimmers from our swimming team competed in the HKSSF swimming gala at Shing Mun Olympic pool. The standard at competition at this event is extremely high; there are a large number of national level swimmers competing. Everyone swam fantastically! We had a number of 1st and 2nd in the heats and virtually all of our swimmers finishing in the top 10 in the finals. As teams the girls finished 6th and the boys finished 7th which was an amazing result as there were over 20 teams in each event. Yehudi Chan was our star swimmer of the day finishing 3rd overall in the 100m freestyle.

We entered two teams in the GSIS under 10 soccer tournament. All the players played extremely well. Unfortunately they didn’t make it through to the final stages of the competition but they all had a great time at their first outing in the Bradbury kit.

We also entered two teams in the Hong Lok Yuen soccer tournament. The B team had a great tournament and won the fair play award for their fantastic sportsmanship. The A team also had a great tournament bringing home the winners trophy. If they keep this up I think Mrs. Webster may need to look at buying a new trophy cabinet.

HONG KONG YOUNG WRITERS AWARDS 2010

Bradbury School has entered the Hong Kong Young Writers Awards 2010 writing competition. The competition is open to students aged 14 and under and we have entered the Primary Division in two categories: under 9, and 10-11 years. The theme of the competition is New Tales of the South China Sea. There will be awards for poetry, non-fiction and short story writing.

In April 2010, a publication of an anthology containing all of the shortlisted work will be available from Dymocks in Hong Kong. Winning entries will be selected by an independent panel of judges chaired by author Nuri Vittachi, and the published authors will be invited to an Award Ceremony to collect their prizes.

Submissions are due in January, so please encourage your children to write! All entries can be submitted to Carolyn Andrews at carolyn.andrews@bs.esf.edu.hk or the class teacher.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

 MIDDLE PHASE STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student Council in Years 3 and 4 meet regularly to discuss concerns raised by their classmates. One issue that has come up a few times is students not having anyone to play with at playtime.

The Council really wanted to help so they came up the idea of Play Leaders. The Play Leaders wear special bibs that all students can recognize. The Play Leaders are there to help organize games with children as well as ensure everyone who wants to play, will have someone to play with.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Practice for this year’s Battle of the Books has begun!

Battle of the Books is a competition that takes place each year. Year 5 and 6 students from ESF schools as well as other international schools form teams to compete against each other for the Battle of the Books title. To win the title, the teams must correctly answer questions taken from a list of 20 titles – the titles are different every year, so every year is a different adventure!

Students are now meeting on Thursdays at lunch time to prepare for the May competition. We have about 46 students signed up so far, eagerly reading their way through this year’s selection of 20 books. During this practice time, students meet to compare notes on the books they have read, and use these notes to prepare for practice battles. The overall plan is that all students will complete all 20 books before the May competition. It’s not too late to sign up – interested students should come see Ms Andrews.
