PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Seasons greetings to you all!

What a great term this has been, full of wonderful learning opportunities for our students and lots of chances for us to come together as a community.

Bradbury School is a very special place; warm and welcoming. My thanks to you all on behalf of all staff for supporting us all, staff and students alike, throughout the term.

We bid farewell to two staff members:
• Fatima Distefano – Class 2G Educational Assistant who is returning to her home in the U.S.A.
• Isabel Winter – part time Individual Needs Teacher who is leaving us to enjoy life in Hong Kong
Thank you both for all you have done for our students over the years. We will miss you and wish you well for your next great adventure.

All the best too, to Angela Gou , Mandarin Teacher, as she leaves to await the birth of her baby. Angela will be on maternity leave until first week of March 2017.

My best wishes to you all over this Christmas break for a peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable break. See you all on
3 January 2017.

GATEWAY ONGOING STUDENT PROGRESS REPORTING

As part of our annual Assessment Recording and Reporting (ARR) process you are able to access your child’s ongoing assessments on Gateway, where you can view your child’s current level of achievement in assessed Language and Maths objectives as well as the assessed PYP Units of Inquiry. This will be available to you on Gateway on Tuesday 13 December 2016.

In addition, at the end of the school year, in June 2017, you will be able to access, print and save your child’s ‘Annual School Report’ from Gateway.

To access your child’s Online Report on Gateway:
• Log into Gateway using your parent login details. (If you can’t remember either your User ID or Password for Gateway select “forgot password or login name” on Gateway login page.)
• In Gateway select:

o ARR Report
o Online Report

Please note that the objectives that your child has been assessed against for this ongoing reporting process are the same end of year objectives that will appear in the Annual School Report in June. Therefore, your child’s current achievement level may reflect that they are working towards achieving the objective which they would be expected to meet by the end of Term 3.

For your information, below are the descriptors used when assessing your child’s levels of achievement:

1: Beginning 2: Consolidating 3: Meeting 4: Exceeding

The student has begun to demonstrate some evidence of achieving year level learning outcomes, however, there is limited application of knowledge, skills and understandings. The student’s learning is below year level expectations at this time.
The student has demonstrated evidence of the year level learning outcomes. The student is practising skills and is developing knowledge and understandings. Although learning is at year level expectations, it is not yet fully consistent or independent.
The student has demonstrated knowledge of the year level learning outcomes and is applying knowledge, skills and understandings consistently and independently. Learning is at year level expectations.
The student has demonstrated evidence exceeding the year level learning outcomes in a variety of ways and applies higher level knowledge, skills and understandings consistently. Learning exceeds year level expectations.

FOOD PACKING

Many thanks to the Bradbury families who last Saturday morning 3 December gave up their time to pack the food bags for the charity Sunshine Action. The Bradbury team were once again very effective and packed 330 bags to help those in need over the Christmas period. It was great to see many younger members of the Bradbury community doing such a great job as well.

Clayton Heggie – Y5 Teacher

ORGANIC COMPOST FOR SALE

Eco Dudes have been very busy over Term 1 composting all of the banana peels, orange peels and apple cores that students save in their classroom bokashi bins. The end result is a nutrient-rich compost that can be added as much to the top of potted plants or mixed in with store bought soil when repotting plants. The compost will significantly improve plant growth and fruiting and/or flowering.

Bags are available for $40 each. Money and a carry bag can be sent to Mrs Thomas in Room 201.

Lorinda Thomas – Y4 Teacher/ Environmental Leader

 YEAR 1 CHRISTMAS CAROL CONCERT

On Tuesday 6 December, Year One’s performed their Christmas Carol Concert to visitors from kindergartens and St Mary’s Home for the Elderly. On Wednesday 7 December, we welcomed the Year One parents to join in our singing. The children looked lovely all dressed up in many different Christmas characters and sang so beautifully.

Anna Gardener – Year 1 Teacher Leader

YEAR 5 ARTS UNIT

Year 5 students have been looking into how emotive messages can influence an audience.
The students have been learning about various art forms and techniques, how emotions are expressed and how emotive messages can be interpreted.

The students held an art gallery for the school community to showcase their work which was very successful. The students enjoyed talking about their learning and sharing their final works with an audience.

P.E. NEWS

Netball

On Saturday, our A Grade girls performed very well in a tough tournament at AISHK. Without too many excuses, the great skill level of the girls was often thwarted by the much taller girls from some of the other international schools. This didn’t impede their fight and determination to the last whistle.

Our C Grade girls had a fine run out for their first time playing in a competitive tournament. With the majority of the team being made up of Year 4 students it proved the future is bright. They placed an admirable 5th place.

A big ‘thank you’ to Sigrid Balle, Liz Worley and Chanelle Candy for all their energy this term to offer an excellent season of netball.

Finally, an acknowledgement to the parents for supporting their children to attend training and games.

After School Activities

In addition, I would like to offer my appreciation to all those parents and children whom have supported the After School Activities (ASA) programme this term. We hope that you have enjoyed the opportunities on offer.

The ASA registration for TERM 2 will close today (Friday, 9 December) at 2.30pm. Please ensure your child is signed up if you wish them to take part in one of them.

(N.B.After School Activities are mainly on offer for Years 3 to 6.)

Congratulations to Rose Fong who will be representing our country – Hong Kong in the Women’s Rugby World Cup Qualifier. The qualifier features Japan, Fiji and Hong Kong with the top two teams qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Ireland.

Hong Kong play Fiji next Friday night at King’s Park and then take on their regional arch rivals – Japan – at HKFC on Saturday 17 December.

We wish Rosie and the Hong Kong women’s team the best of luck as they look to put Hong Kong on the women’s rugby map.

P.T.A. NEWS

On behalf of the PTA Committee, I would like to say an enormous Thank You to everybody who was involved in making this year’s Winter Night Market such a resounding success. We had a record attendance, delicious food and drinks, fantastic games, the Discovery Dome and some Christmas shopping thrown in. Together we raised a record amount of money, but more importantly we had a wonderful evening bringing together parents, teachers and students.

So, if you donated time, food, books, money or prizes, volunteered on the night or helped with the huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make an event like this happen – thank you! The Night Market would not be possible without you!

I would like to say a special thank you to my Night Market Planning Committee, Catherine Hufton, Marilu Logudic and Malina Kirpalani. They made it all possible with their hard work and enthusiasm. We are already talking about next year and how we can make it even better!

I would also like to thank the amazing Discovery Dome team who ran Discovery dome shows all evening free of charge. ALL proceeds from this went straight to the PTA!!

All the money raised from our fundraising goes straight back to the school for the benefit of all our children. This year our main project, in addition to our usual donations, is to replace the safety flooring in the blue playground under the slide play structure. The money we raised at the Night Market will make a large contribution to this, which is fantastic.

If you have any suggestions or ideas for fundraising or projects within the school that the PTA might be able to fund please email us at pta@bradbury.edu.hk

Don’t forget to check out and like our Facebook page for all the PTA news and upcoming event details!
