Battle of the Books

Our Battle of the Books Team is still going strong! Students meet every Wednesday and battle to be named winning team for the week. There are 20 titles of books to be read for the formal competition in the third term, and we already have one student that has read 20 books and all of the children have at least read one book or are have almost completed it! I am very impressed with the level of commitment and enthusiasm our Year 5 and 6 students have shown for the competition. As the leader of literacy for the school – I feel we have already won the greatest battle – our students love to read!
Here are our teams!

YEAR 5 CAMP
What a great camp for 5HT and 5T! The two classes left for Chong Hing Water Sports Centre on Monday morning, laden down with their camping gear, food for the camp and lots of cool resources to help us with our collaborative activities.

Monday afternoon saw us starting our land and water based activities including a rotation on land involving games based upon recycling and environmental issues and archery. The water based groups experienced using kayaks, pedal boats, a dragon boat and rowing boats. These all called for a lot of co-operation, communication and risk taking!
Next, the students put up their tents and organised their sleeping arrangements. They showered, had a lovely pizza dinner before heading down to a campfire and a ‘tribal council’. We even played a spotlight game with our torches! We were hoping to do some star gazing but cloudy skies unfortunately meant that this had to be cancelled.

After an exciting night in the tents, our tired but enthusiastic students completed their rotations, had lunch and then took part in more collaborative activities on the land. After a pasta dinner and showers we had our final tribal council and an early night!

I would like to thank all of the students for their excellent behaviour, open mindedness, risk taking and above all their never ending enthusiasm. In fact, I’d like to thank the adults who gave up their time to help on camp for the same things! Special thanks go to Mrs Thompson, Mrs Tarr, Mr Cook, Miss Franklin, Mrs Barlow and of course, our camp powerhouse, Miss Farry, without whom none of the water activities in particular could have gone ahead.

A couple of quotes from the students to finish, “This is the best day ever!” and of course,
“Camp ROCKS!”

To facilitate our planning for the session it would be appreciated if you could RSVP via email to Chris Duncan – christopher.duncan@bs.esf.edu.hk by Thursday 24th November 2011.

Some of the key components of the program to be discussed are::

-          Bradbury Units of Inquiry (6 per year level)

Please note that a number of our Year 1 parents attended an Introductory PYP session in August (as part of the Year 1 Induction program) and the content of this session will be similar.

Tea and coffee will be provided and the venue for this meeting will be the school’s
Multi-purpose room (Level (1) next to the staff room). We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 29th November 2011

UPCOMING EVENTS
November 26Christmas is Coming Talent Show
December 9Winter Night Market

TALENT SHOW - Saturday, November 26 - 2:30pm - 6:00pm

With over 33 acts from Year 1 to Year 6 students, this is certainly going to be a fun and festive competition!!  The top five finalists from each grade level group will compete in the "LIVE FINALS" on the evening of the Bradbury School Winter Night Market - Friday, December 9.  Please come and support your friends as they sing and dance to some of our favorite Christmas Tunes!!  If you have any questions, please contact Judy Stevenson at  stevensonhk@netvigator.com.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Do you have access to Fairy Lights?  Do you have experience with lighting for events?  The PTA is looking for a parent/s who may have access to Fairy Lights and/or work for an events planning agency and is willing to provide assistance, advice and support for lighting the Winter Night Market, or even donate the necessary lighting for the evening.  If you have any information to share, please contact Cassie Jullienne at jullienne@me.com.

Items needed for the Winter Night Market!
  • Prizes for the Tombola - bottles of wine or spirits or any new gift items (for adults or children)
  • Used books
  • Any parent who works for or who has a connection with a toy manufacturer - we would love to have a new toy stall for the children to spend their pocket money!!
Please drop off any items to the PTA Shop!!

RAFFLE TICKETS

Raffle tickets were sent home on 11 November.  As the raffle is the major contributor to the Winter Night Market annual fundraiser, we need your help to make it a big success!!  Each child received one book of 10 raffle tickets.  Each ticket is $20 or $200 per book.  If you received more than one book, we would appreciate you selling as many as you can.  If you need more books, please see Lin in the PTA office - we have already had families requesting more books!!  If you have already returned your sold ticket stubs and money - THANK YOU!!  The deadline for all sold ticket stubs and money to be returned to your class teacher is Friday, 25 November.

YEAR GROUP GIFT HAMPERS

The PTA's major fundraiser, the Winter Night Market, will be held on Friday, 9 December.  The biggest single profit generator at previous school fairs has been the raffle, so we are going to have a raffle again this year.  We have been able to source some great prizes from outside sponsors, but the most popular prizes remain the Year Group Gift Hampers!!  This is where we need your help!!

Your Class Parent should have sent an email indicating the theme for your Year Group Hamper.  If you are willing to help, please send in any cash donations (which will be used to purchase items for the hamper) or individual items based on the theme and itemized list provided by the Class Parent.  The deadline for donations is 21 November.  As this is a fund raising event, it would be of greater benefit to the PTA (and thus our children!) to donate any extra cash raised - above the $2000 value for each hamper - directly to the Winter Night Market profits or to donate any extra gift items collected for use on the Tombola Stall at the Night Market.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are looking for parent volunteers for the Bradbury School Winter Night Market!!  If you are willing to donate any of your time to help with this fun, festive event, please email Cassie Jullienne at jullienne@me.com.

LOLLY BAGS

During the week of 21 November, please keep an eye out for a brown paper bag!!  Your child will bring home a brown paper bag with a note attached.  We are asking your help to have your child decorate the bag in keeping with the Christmas Theme, fill the bag with $20 worth of sweets, and have your child deliver the bag to the Lolly Bag Box located at the Reception Desk by Friday, 2 December.  These special Lolly Bags will be available for purchase during the Winter Night Market - another great, easy fundraiser - and one where the kids get involved!!

VICTORIAN DAY REFLECTION
Anxious, nervous and excited, we all sat down on the floor. Teachers began to come down. Mr Taylor had his hair combed, dressed like a Victorian. Mr Fennely was wearing a black hat, booming at us when we were talking. Mrs van der Vossen and Mr Harris came down, frowning down at us.   First, Mr Ainsworth made us do a hand check.
“Disgraceful” he shouted at Xenia. “Go and stand in the corner.” Alex had to too. We entered the hall. Tables were placed into rows. I sat next to Moeka. We looked at each other and gave a nervous smile.

The register had to be taken.Every time the teachers called out our surname, we had to say “Yes, Sir”. It got kind of confusing because they were saying the surname and some people had the same surnames. I had to say “Yes, Maam” to Mrs V. The handwriting lesson was especially hard since I am left handed and in Victorian times the left hand was the devils hand.

Then we had Mandarin. We had to memorise a whole poem. When we had break, the girls were stuck in the butterfly garden while the boys got to run around on the tarmac. Before the girls would sew and chat quietly. After break, we had maths and science about potatoes. We were talking about pence, shilling and pounds in maths. In science, we had to repeat everything the teachers said. When we drew the diagram of the potato, we had to label everything. If we did it wrong, it was a smack on the table. The teachers were unkind to the children. Gruel was the worst! I hated it!

After lunch we had a moral lesson.  Mrs Webster told us a moral story. Then we had to say another prayer. Three prayers! When Victorian day finished I was sooooo glad.

I learnt that the teachers in Victorian time were really strict and gruel was disgusting (to me).Sewing was for girls and boys got to run around. The classes were really big and the teachers were rude but the children had to respect them. I also learnt that there was a hat called the dunce hat, where you have to wear it if your teacher thought you were being stupid and sit on a chair.
