Dear Parents,

Greetings to you all and a Happy New Year.  I hope that the new term has started well for you.

Our website has been updated with the following documents for your information:

  • Bradbury School 2010/11 Annual Report
  • 2011/12 Annual Implementation Plan
  • 2011/14 Strategic Three Year Plan

We also have a Parent Handbook on the website in which you may find some useful information.

A warm welcome to Johnny Wong who has joined our office team as Admissions Officer.  Johnny is doing a great job, do say hello when you see him!

John Ainsworth is now Years 1 and 2 Phase Leader so please contact him as necessary on that role.

At a recent P.T.A. meeting, the subject of hats, specifically motivating children to both keep them and wear them came up.  The committee suggested that students be allowed to personalise the top of their hat as an incentive to do the above.  I am happy to support this and so please feel free to allow your child to be creative!

 Regards,

 Sandra Webster

 Principal

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION IN SCHOOL

Chinese New Year is approaching and we are sending seasons greetings to you and to wish you all Happy New Year of the Dragon!

Your child will be able to tell you about the origins and some of the traditions of Chinese New Year that they may have been learning in class recently.

In order to lift the festival spirit, could I please ask you to dress your child in Chinese costumes on Friday, 20 January 2012?  If there is a problem in getting a Chinese costume for you or your family, please dress your child/children in school uniform as normal on that day.

Thank you very much for your great cooperation.

恭喜发财Gong Xi Fa Cai!  新年快乐Xin Nian Kuai Le!

 Best regards,

Jenny Chen - Head of Chinese Department

REPORTING TO PARENTS

This term, we will once again hold our Student Led Conferences.  This is where your child takes you through their learning and talks to you about this.

The feedback that we have received from you indicates that these are valued and positively received. Other feedback indicates that you would still very much like some time with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress.

We have our 10 minute Parent Teacher Interviews in Term 1 and again in Term 3 (these ones are optional). So, for a Term 2 catch up I would like to invite you to make an appointment to meet your child’s teacher at a time during the term that is mutually convenient.

I would also like to remind you that at any time during the year you are welcome to do this.

THE GREAT RACE CHALLENGER

THE GREAT RACE CHALLENGER – THE WALK TO THE LOOKOUT TEMPLE

     BY: VALENTINE PEAN

The sun was burning down on us as we walked the steep hill and sweat trickled down my cheeks and onto my boiling neck. My legs felt like they were going to explode.

“Hurry up,” called Mr Steed as we started running up the bumpy hill.

After a while we had to walk up lots of what seemed endless, steep steps.  I had sore blisters on my feet and they burned with each step.

Finally we arrived at the Lookout Temple. I was exhausted but I was so impressed with the view of the green mountains and the blue sea. We wearily sat on the bench and put on mosquito repellent and sun cream.

After that we opened the challenge envelope and it said we had to make a human pyramid and take a picture of it. We started to kneel on the floor. I was at the bottom and Tiana was on my back. After a wobbly start and lots of laughing, we finally took a picture of it and then we had five tasks to go.

P.E. NEWS
Well we certainly hit the ground running (pardon the pun), this term. In our first week back we had two mixed netball tournaments and an athletics meet.

The team played amazingly well in both their mixed netball tournaments. They finished third in both the tournaments against some very stiff competition from schools across Hong Kong. Full tournament reports and photographs of both these events can be seen on the P.E. page of The Buzz.

After school netball will restart in term 3, but for anyone interested in continuing to play throughout term 2 there is good news! Emma Gregory from ESF educational services is starting a class here at Bradbury School on Saturday mornings. It will be for 7 Saturdays starting on 4th Feb. It will run alongside the 6 Sundays of the Junior Netball League, so there will be plenty of chance to play in matches and tournaments. If you are interested in enrolling in this class please contact Emma directly emma.gregory@esf.org.hk

As an extension to our curriculum P.E. athletics program a group of our top athletes were selected to go to the HKSSF HK East athletics meet. This was a huge event from which the best athletes would be selected to represent the HK East athletics team and subsequently HK.

Our team performed amazingly, with outstanding performances from so many of our students. Special mention goes to Ashlin Devonport for finishing second in the girls high jump and Elliot Burnett for finishing first in the throwing event. Elliot not only finished first in his event, he smashed the HK record. Both Ashlin and Elliot have been selected to represent HK East in March. As well as their fantastic athletic performances the entire team must be commended on their behaviour on the day. Their sportsmanship and team spirit was an absolute credit to themselves and to Bradbury School. Photographs from the event and a report of the day can be found on the P.E. page of The Buzz.

After school activities

All applications for after school activities are now closed and the activities are well underway. A huge ‘thank you’ to all our teachers and E.A’s who give up their time to offer these activities for the children. Unfortunately there was a misprint in the enrolment form. Rugby is being offered from Years 3-6 and not just Years 4-6 as stated. In light of this if any Year 3’s want to still join rugby then we will accept their enrolment forms this week. Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

As you already know Lal Jennings (ex Hong Kong cricket team coach) and his team of coaches from smasher cricket are back at school this term coaching the after school cricket sessions. If anyone is interested in further developing their cricket skill and attending extra cricket sessions check out their website at www.crickethongkong.com for a list of the amazing opportunities on offer.

I have been contacted again by the management team of the Asia Pacific Barbarians. The team are coming back to Hong Kong this year and we are working on timetabling a visit to Bradbury School into their schedule. A number of the players will be heading up coaching sessions at the football club, so if you are keen to learn from the legends check out their website at www.apacbarbarians.com or www.davidcampeseacademy.com and see who you could be being coached by.
