PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

I hope that you will be able to make the official opening of our new library on Thursday night. This is a very special event for us as a school, the development of it has been a two year project.

Please accept this as your personal invitation. It would be wonderful to have you there.

Yours sincerely,

Sandra Webster
Principal

GREEN POWER
We are excited about increasing our Bradbury 'GREEN POWER' this year and would like to let you know about our new recycling bins. We have large bins for recycling aluminium cans, waste paper and plastic that are located on the lower ground floor outside Nurse Lauren’s room as well as outside the staff room on the 1st floor. Please encourage your children to use these bins rather than throwing their recyclables into the regular rubbish bins. Between the staff and pupils here, just through snacks and lunches, we accumulate a lot of rubbish over one day, one week, one term, one school year. The good news is that lots of it can be re-used through re-cycling, either by taking it home and re-using or by placing it in our recycling bins- sandwich bags are a good example as lots of us use them  and they can have a very long life if washed and re-used.

If you and your children are taking GREEN action at home, we would love to know about it - you can show it through writing, drawing, photographs or any other way and we can share this via our GREEN POWER noticeboard. Please send children to me with anything they would like to put on display. We are proud of our school and our environment here at Bradbury, if we think GREEN, we act GREEN and together we will make a difference. Thanks for your support,

Aylish Franklin - Year 1 Teacher

WORKSHOP FOR CAREGIVERS/HELPERS
We want to offer as much support as we can to assist our students’ learning. To this end, we will be offering a workshop especially aimed at helpers which will focus on supporting reading, looking at strategies and activities, with the view to helping to motivate children to read at home and providing your helper with skills that they can try.

If you are interested in your helper attending this reading workshop,  it will be run by myself, Carolyn Andrews, Marilyn Day and Anne Cano-Shearer on Thursday November 17th from 1.30-2.30 pm

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Regards.

RECEIVING A GIFT FROM LEGCO
Recently we had two members of Legco, Tania Chan and Audrey Eu, visit Bradbury School. They came to visit my Chinese class. My teacher asked me to recite a poem to them and one of the members, Ms. Audrey Eu was very impressed, so she gave me a calligraphy writing of the poem that she had done. I am really proud to have received it and it is very good.

P.E. NEWS
Curriculum P.E.

This week marks the end of the Years 4, 5 and 6 athletics, or track and field units of work. Hopefully some of you had a chance to attend the athletics meets. Photos of each of these meets and a list of the winners can be found on the P.E. page of The Buzz. These children are now moving on to their outdoor and adventurous unit. This unit focuses on teamwork and the work that is covered here will be continued throughout their various camps.

Year 3 have their athletic meet next week, I hope to see some of you at that. Once again the photographs and results will be on The Buzz. Year 3 will then move onto their Karate unit with Heyton Tze. Years 1 and 2 will continue with their athletics units of work until the end of term

After School Activities

Once again may I remind you that although after school activities are outside of school hours we do expect a certain level of commitment. The sign up period is for the term. During these sessions teachers are both training teams for inter school matches and we have a number of other schools come to play us during these sessions. Both our staff and staff at other schools put a lot of effort into the organisation of these events. It is very frustrating for the staff involved and for the children who are present to have to waste a considerable portion of the session rearranging teams and the way the afternoon will run. On Tuesday alone we were missing 6 children from soccer who were in school that day, none of whom had informed anyone that they would not be attending. This meant we were a complete team short for the competition we had arranged against Carmel School that evening.

As the famous phrase points out 'there is no 'I' in team'. A sense of responsibility and commitment are things that we should be teaching our children as life skills. Games activities are ideal ways to do this.

Our fantastically enthusiastic student council has already started some great work around the school. Last week we travelled around the playgrounds at break time and identified areas that they would like to develop. Some of these included more lost property bins; nominating benches as 'Friendship Areas' for anyone to meet at, who would like to meet new friends to play with; posters reminding and explaining to students about our guiding statements including the school vision and mission and our rules of respect and also signs reminding students to leave spiders alone!

Congratulations to the student council on a great start and don't forget that if your child has some ideas about how we can continue to make Bradbury school a fantastic place to be, and they are not a student councillor, they can discuss these ideas with their class representatives and the council will see what they can do!

Upper School Camps

Camp season is well and truly upon us! This beautiful weather is helping to further enthuse our already over excited students and staff in looking forward to our upcoming camp experiences!

5HT and 5T go to their water sports and outdoor activities camp on the 14th November and 5A and 5B will attend the same camp on the 28th November.

Year 6 will be travelling up to Outward Bound in Sai Kung on the 6th December to experience many exciting and adventurous activities.

All of these camps continue to build upon the experiences that we give our students at school including team building activities, working cooperatively, self management skills and, of course enjoying our learning in a variety of exciting and stimulating ways.

We hope that both sets of parents have received their emailed invitations to the information sessions about these camps. The Year 5 information session will be held between 4:30pm and 5pm and the Outward Bound presentation will be at 5:30pm. Both of these information sessions will be held in the school hall.
