PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

Greetings to you all!

Last year, Science was an area of curriculum focus and staff development, so as a means of reporting this back to you, over the rest of this term you will be given the opportunity to come into your child’s classroom to observe and engage with them as they learn about science.

The times for each year group will vary according to when science fits in with the classroom programme.  Your child’s teacher will advise you of the date.

Please take the opportunity to come in and see science at work – we believe that it is an excellent way to report back to you and to involve you in the classroom.

 Thank you.

 Regards,

 Sandra Webster

Principal

COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS (CIS) ACCREDITATION
 Council of International Schools Accreditation

On Monday 30 January, all of the Bradbury School full time staff embarked on the second phase of our C.I.S. accreditation.

The steering committee had already worked hard on the first section of the accreditation, which included organising an Endicott survey, gathering school information and hosting a preliminary accreditation visit.

The second phase is known as the school self study. All full time staff at the school are involved in analysing various aspects of school this academic year, while focussing on Learning and Teaching in terms 1 and 2 next academic year. We are looking at our guiding statements, governance and leadership, faculty and support staff, access to teaching and learning, school culture and partnerships for learning and operational systems until the end of the summer term.

From the survey, the preliminary visit and the school self study we will create and adapt a longer term strategic plan that will feed into our current action plan.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the teachers, full time EA’s and support staff for their dedication and enthusiasm in analysing the standards and indicators in their different sections.

 ESF Stakeholder Survey

In early March 2012, ESF Centre will be sending out its bi-annual stakeholder survey. This survey is expected to be completed by students in Years 4, 5 and 6, teachers, educational assistants, support staff and parents. I will send out more details about this survey closer to the time.

LIBRARY NEWS
 Paddyfield Orders

The winter issue of Paddyfield has been distributed, and the orders are due in by Friday February 10th.  Please make sure your order form has your child’s name written on it clearly, attached to your cheque.

Under ESF policy guidelines, we may no longer receive any rebate credit points from Paddyfield (previously generated through parent purchases) to purchase new books for our library.  Paddyfield will instead return bonus coupons directly to parents.  We have had some parents ask if they may donate these to the library in order to purchase books from Paddyfield.  We would be very glad to accept these donations, and of course any books we are able to purchase this way would have a donation plaque inside with your child’s name on it.

 Parent volunteers

We have had many wonderful parent volunteers helping us in our new library this year.  Some parents come in to help with shelving, which is greatly appreciated as we circulate approximately 1000 books a week.  We also have parents who help with backing new books in order to get them on to the shelves quickly.

If you would like to spend some time helping in the library we are always keen to meet new volunteers.  Tea and coffee is provided, and it can be a great way to meet / catch up with other parents.  Please either send an email or drop in to see me if you have spare time to help now and then.

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS
I have recently been given the details of a 'cello teacher who is prepared to work at Bradbury School. If any of you would like your child to play the 'cello, or indeed any other instrument, please let Mr. Clothier know.

Children at Bradbury School have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument and lessons are taught by experienced peripatetic teachers as follows:

Violin – Years 1 to 6

Voice – Years 4 -6

Clarinet – Years 4 – 6

Guitar – Years 4 – 6

Flute - Years 4 – 6

‘Cello – Years 4 – 6

Saxophone – Years 5 – 6

Drums – Years 2 – 6

These lessons are generally taught individually, either at lunchtime or after school and on a private basis. Lessons costs approximately $270 for 30 minutes, but this does vary slightly depending on the teacher. The school has several clarinets and flutes that can be rented for $550/term. If you would like your child to begin lessons, please email Mr. Clothier in the Music Department (clothierg@bs.esf.edu.hk) stating your child’s name, class and preferred instrument. One of the instrumental teachers will then contact you to discuss specific arrangements such as time and cost of lessons, purchase of instrument, any books needed, etc.

  Thank you.

P.E. NEWS
 Curriculum P.E.

In specialist P.E. lessons all the children are currently learning gymnastics. Please ensure your child has their Bradbury School P.E. T Shirt and Shorts under their grey tracksuit. The children get far too hot in the gym during lessons so need to remove their tracksuits. The tracksuits are also a safety issue in a number of the activities and as such are impeding your child’s learning in this area.

Well done to 4M who were the first class in my 5 years at Bradbury School to all have their shorts and T shirts under their tracksuits.

 After School Activities

As you all know this term’s after school activities are well underway. We are currently busy organizing matches and tournaments with other schools for each of the activities we run. As well as this I am starting to put things in place for next terms after school activities. We have a very exciting development in term 3! We will be starting a golf program for Years 4-6 on Monday afternoons here at school. So keep an eye out in the newsletter for the sign up forms when they appear at the end of this term.
